ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Howie Kendrick had a two-run single in his first game batting leadoff this season, Chris Iannetta hit a pair of RBI singles and the Los Angeles Angels beat Cleveland 6-4 Tuesday night, sending the Indians to their fifth straight defeat. Cleveland also lost All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis to an abdominal strain in the fourth inning. Jered Weaver (2-2) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking one. The Angels ace threw 90 pitches and was lifted after giving up four consecutive hits, including a two-run homer by Carlos Santana. Joe Smith, the seventh Angels pitcher, tossed a perfect ninth for his second save in two nights against his former teammates after he was thrust into the closers role last Friday in place of an ineffective Ernesto Frieri. Corey Kluber (2-3) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and four hits over 4 2-3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks. The right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth, retiring Albert Pujols on a popup after an intentional walk to Mike Trout and then striking out Raul Ibanez with the Indians trailing 2-0. The Angels put runners at the corners in the fifth with the help of a successful replay challenge by manager Mike Scioscia, after first base umpire Gabe Morales ruled J.B. Shuck out on a potential double-play grounder to second base that was corrected to a fielders choice. Shuck stole second, and Kendrick chased Kluber with a two-run single to centre for a 4-0 lead after a walk to Collin Cowgill. That was the only official at-bat for the Angels second baseman, who got plunked by Klubers second pitch of the game, had a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and walked in the seventh. Kendrick became the fifth player Scioscia has started in the leadoff spot. It was the 12th time Kendrick has started there in his nine-year career, the rest coming in 2010. He is 13 for 47 with two homers, 10 RBIs, four walks and eight runs scored when starting atop the lineup, and the Angels are 9-3 in those games. Santana, who hit a three-run homer in Monday nights series-opening 6-3 loss, got the Indians off the mat in the sixth with his two-run shot to right field after a single by Mike Aviles. Michael Brantley then snapped an 0-for-17 drought with a double and went to third on a single by Asdrubal Cabrera that chased Weaver. But Michael Kohn struck out Yan Gomes with the bases loaded after a two-out walk to David Murphy and a visit from pitching coach Mike Butcher. Yoslan Herrera gave way to Nick Maronde with the bases loaded and none out in the Cleveland seventh, and Santana drew a four-pitch walk that forced home a run. Brantley followed with a sacrifice fly that cut the Angels lead to 5-4 and brought in Kevin Jepsen, who struck out Cabrera and retired Jason Giambi on a deep fly. Aviles took over at second base in the fourth for Kipnis, who left with an abdominal strain on his right side after grounding into a double play. The versatile rookie has made the search difficult by playing well wherever the club has put him. Holt made his first professional start in centre field and he appeared perfectly comfortable in his fifth position this season. He made a sensational diving catch to end the third inning and scored both Boston runs in the Red Soxs 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on Tuesday night. "It seems like Brock at some point in each game has an effect on whats going on," said Jon Lester, who weathered a shaky start and pitched six-plus strong innings. "Im sure well see him with catchers gear or on the mound at some point this year. The guys done an unbelievable job." Holt ended the third inning with a diving catch on a ball that left fielder Jonny Gomes lost in the twilight. Gomes signalled with his hands that he couldnt see it, but Holt was already on the move and lunged just in time to complete the catch. "Fortunately I was able to get over there and make a play," Holt said. Boston fans gave him a long ovation during his entire trot to the dugout, and teammates waited with high-fives and pats on the back on the way. Holt happened to be up next and led off with a double off the Green Monster, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox up 2-0. "He comes out of nowhere and makes a diving catch. In a way, he took over the inning," Boston manager John Farrell said. "He doesnt get hung up on moving to a position for the first time. He goes out and plays." Holt scored Bostons first run after he singled and then came in on an RBI double by Dustin Pedroia. Lester (8-7) needed 33 pitches to get out of the first inning on a hot, muggy night, then settled down and took a shutout into the sixth. He left with one out in the seventh after striking out six and holding the Twins to one run, four hits and a walk. Edward Mujica pitched the ninth annd earned his second save.dddddddddddd Phil Hughes (7-3) took the loss for the Twins, who have dropped four straight. The Red Sox have held Minnesota to one run and seven hits in the first two games of the series. Hughes gave up two runs and eight hits in eight innings and struck out six. "He did all he could do. He gave us a great opportunity to win. We just couldnt come up with enough big hits," manager Ron Gardenhire said. After Danny Santana opened the game with a single,, Lester retired 13 of the next 14 batters and didnt allow another hit until Kurt Suzuki singled with one out in the fifth. Minnesota cut it to 2-1 in the sixth when Santana led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt by Brian Dozier, and scored on Joe Mauers double. "We need to knock in some runs," Gardenhire said. "We need more of them." Pedroia nearly broke open the game on a fly ball to left that was inches short of a two-run homer. Instead, it was a single, and Pedroia was caught in a rundown. The play was reviewed for several minutes, and the call on the field stood. NOTES: Holt played centre field on Tuesday and has made starts in all three outfield positions, as well as first and third base. ... MINNEAPOLIS -- Matt Cassel was one day away from hitting the free agent market and fielding offers from other suitors. Then the Minnesota Vikings swooped in at the last minute. The Vikings agreed to terms with Cassel on Friday on a deal that will keep him in Minnesota, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person requested anonymity because an official announcement had not been made. Terms of the deal, which was first reported by NFL Network, were not immediately available. The move helps solidify the Vikings shaky quarterback situation. The team used a musical chairs approach to the position last season, rotating Christian Ponder and Cassel, and even starting Josh Freeman for one game during a miserable 5-10-1 season. Cassel was by far the most effective of the three, going 3-3 in his six starts and being on the field at the end of all five of the teams victories. He completed 60.2 per cent of his passes for 1,807 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions after signing as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs. But he opted out of the final year of his two-year deal in February, and there was concern Cassel would choose to move to another team after he was forced to split time with the ineffective Ponder. New head coach Mike Zimmer said Thursday he "would love to have Matt Cassel back if Matt Cassel wants to be back." But the coach was also bracing for the likelihood Cassel would at least test free agency before giving the Vikings an answer. "Hes got a bunch of pretty girls looking at him right now," Zimmer said then. "And he wants to explore and see whats best for him. I dont blame any of these guys. In free agency, I think thats why they have the rules is that they get a chance to go see what their markets worth. Then if they find a better situation than what they think is here, then I think thats everywhere." It appears Cassel knew where he wanted to be all along. Cassels familiarity with the teams offensive players -- Adrian Peterson, Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson and Kyle Rudolph among them -- and the way the team responded to Cassels leadership on the field were among the big reasons the Vikings wanted him back. The agreement would appear to make Cassel the front-runner to be the starter when the 2014 season opens with new offensive co-ordinator Norv Turner calling the plays. Ponder is still on the roster, but his performance over his first three seasons has inspired little confidence among his teammates. The Vikings have the eighth overall pick in the upcoming draft, and there remains a strong possibility they will select someone to be the teams quarterback of the future. But keeping Cassel in the fold will reduce the pressure on the team to start a rookie. "It all depends, but what I want to do is play the best guy," Zimmer said. "I dont care if hes a rookie, if hes a veteran, if hes a returner. It doesnt matter to me who the quarterback is if he can win games, and thats really what its about, winning football games and figuring out how to do that." Cheap NMD Online . TORONTO - Kevin Pillar doesnt know how long his second shot with the Blue Jays will last but hes here, excited to play and eager to use the opportunity to showcase the strides hes made toward becoming a consistent major league player. Amongst Torontos starting outfielders, only Jose Bautista is signed for next season. Colby Rasmus and Melky Cabrera are in the final year of their deals. "I think guys like myself, guys like Anthony (Gose), know that theres potential for some openings in the outfield coming up," said Pillar. "Were really here to just take care of our business. Any time you get to go out on a big league field its an audition, not only for your team but all the other 29 teams out there. As guys who play the game we want to play in the major leagues. Ideally we want to play for the Blue Jays, theyre the team that drafted me and theyre dear to my heart but anytime you step onto the field you know its an audition for a major league job somewhere." Pillar joins the club red-hot at the plate. After stumbling out of the gate to a .114 batting average (5-for-44), Pillar has gone 38-for-97 (.392) since, which included an 18-game hitting streak. At the time of his recall, hed reached base safely in each of Triple-A Buffalos last 26 games. His nine walks represent an upward trend over his time with the Bisons last year. Pillar has struck out 16 times which, prorated, is a positive trend downward. "Just getting back, using the whole field and being aggressive in counts, hunting the heater and getting better pitches to hit," said Pillar of his early-season adjustments. "Kev, in the minor leagues last year, had a tremendous year," said manager John Gibbons. "He came up here, got his feet wet and it was a little bit of a struggle for him last year. Went back down there to Triple-A this year and really got it going again. Hes a good baseball player. A real good defender, good baserunner and the guy can hit." Like Chad Jenkins and Jonathan Diaz (the man whose roster spot he took – Diaz was optioned to Buffalo on Tuesday) the day before, Pillars travel day began in Charlotte and involved a complicated path to Toronto. He flew from Charlotte to Baltimore, changed planes and flew into Buffalo. After quick stops at his apartment to gather clothes and toiletries and at the Bisons home, Coca Cola Field, where he transferred his equipment to a bag with a Blue Jays logo, he picked up the waiting car service for the drive to Toronto. This time when Pillar arrived in the clubhouse, he knew what to expect. He knew where to go to find what he needed. Its nice to feel comfortable. "That was a huge difference compared to last time," said Pillar. "Coming in, I walked in on egg shells. I didnt really know anyone here. I was greeted with open arms. At least I knew where my locker was, I knew where things were at this time. Its definitely a different feeling this time." "Hes coming back the second time, you know the shock, now he knows what to expect, said Gibbons. "The awe of the big leagues is kind of out the way now. The first time you show up you dont know what to expect and youre kind of overwhelmed or you can be sometimes." Pillar started in centerfield in place of Colby Rasmus on Tuesday night. Rasmus is nursing a tight right hamstring, the condition of which Rasmus said was improving. After Monday nights game, in which Rasmus was removed to start the seventh, Gibbons offered that maybe Rasmus was in need of a stint on the disabled list. Rasmus is hoping to avoid the DL and by Tuesday afternoon Gibbons had changed his tone, sounding hopeful Rasmus would need only a day or two on the bench. Meanwhile, while hes here, Pillar just wants to relax. "I dont have those same butterflies that I did six months ago when I came here the first time," said Pillar. They routed the Oakland Raiders 52-0 a week earlier and now stand at 6-7, a decent showing for a season that could have fallen apart after Sam Bradfords knee injury in August. The Rams hadnt blanked two opponents in a row in 69 years, since the Cleveland Rams beat the Chicago Cardinals 21-0 and the Chicago Bears 17-0.1945? Were about to shut out three! defensive tackle Michael Brockers said. Whens the last time we shut out three? That would be never. Brockers will get a chance to back up the guarantee at home against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday.Brockers also proclaimed a boastful victory in the RG3 trade. He was one of six Rams in Sundays game — all of whom took part in the coin toss — who were part of St. Louis three-year haul stemming from the mega-deal that allowed the Redskins to select Griffin at No. 2 overall in the 2012 draft.I will always be remembered as (being a part of) that blockbuster trade, Brockers said. And, you know, the Rams won.dddddddddddd The Rams won that one.Griffin was benched two weeks ago by coach Jay Gruden, but he made an appearance Sunday in the final two minutes after starter Colt McCoy suffered a sprained neck while getting sacked for the sixth time. St. Louis limited Washington to 206 total yards. Alfred Morris rushed for a meagre six yards on eight carries. Its just the same story — different Sunday, Washington nose tackle Chris Baker said.NOTES: The Rams from the Griffin trade who played were Brockers, Janoris Jenkins, Alec Ogletree, Greg Robinson, Stedman Bailey and Zac Stacy. ... St. Louis K Greg Zuerlein missed an extra point, a 28-yard chip shot and a 38-yard attempt — all wide right — before sneaking one just inside the upright from 34. After the game in the locker room, coach Jeff Fisher turned Zuerleins day into a light-hearted moment by having holder Johnny Hekker put the ball down and Zuerlein kick it into a locker in front of the team. Anytime you have a day like this, its never easy to show your face around everyone, Zuerlein said. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - John Elway and John Fox embraced as they agreed to amicably part ways.Hugs and handshakes might not have been necessary had the Denver Broncos gone out kicking and screaming more often under Fox, the 59-year-old coach whos on the NFL job market with a 49-22 record in Denver on his resume.Nobody had a better regular-season record in any of the last three seasons than the Broncos did with Peyton Manning at quarterback. Yet, Denver lost two first-round playoff games as heavy favourites at home and suffered a 35-point thumping in last years Super Bowl.Elway, the general manager, said on Tuesday he was disappointed the Broncos didnt display more fire against the underdog Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, especially coming off a bye.At least in that last game, you want to feel like you go out kicking and screaming when youre right there, Elway said. And two years in a row it didnt feel like we went out kicking and screaming.Still, Elway thanked Fox and said the two remained friends.I like John Fox as a man very much. He is a very, very good man. Hes got a tremendous heart, even the new one they fixed is still tremendous. And hes a guy that I will always have a personal relationship with. Because I, and we, as an organization, do owe John Fox a tremendous amount because of what he did accomplish the last four years. What they wont owe Fox is his 2015 and 16 salaries if he lands one of the other head coaching jobs that are open.Elway said he did not press Manning for a decision on his future when they met the day after Denvers 24-13 loss to Indianapolis in the AFC divisional playoffs. He said he told the soon-to-be-39-year-old to take a few weeks to make his decision.I told him in four or five weeks — Im going to stay in touch with him — well get back together and see where he is because the career that hes had, what hes done not only in the NFL but in the short time hes been here with the Denver Broncos, what hes meant to us is tremendous, Elway said. The bottom line is we want him back. With or without Manning in 2015, the Broncos have a talent-laden team ready for another playoff run, maybe behind Brock Osweiler, whos served a three-year apprenticeship under Manning.Elway described the parting with Fox as the culmination of a disagreement over what it takes to win the Super Bowl, and stuck to a statement that has lived with him since he signed Manning: There is no Plan B. Plan A is still the same — to win a world championship. While coaching candidates will be eager to know the quarterbacks plans, Manning will certainly want to know how much things will change under a new coaching staff in 2015.Of equal importance to Manning is learning whether his late-season slump was primarily due to scheme, age, or health — he played with a strained thigh on his plant leg for the final month — and also whether he believes Elway can bolster his protection in free agency and the draft. The Broncos made four changes in their offensive line during the season. But pressure, especially up the middle, was a constant concern for Manning, who needs the time and space to step into his throws post-spinal fusion surgery as more of his thrust comes from his hips than his right arm. After spending $60 million in guarantees to bolster Denvers defence last year, Elway said hell address his O-line this off-season.Having been a quarterback, he knows that Im going to try to take care of him and that offensive line, Elway said. Another night of missed chances left the door open for the Nashville Predators to capitalize on a man advantage of their own. Nick Spaling scored the winner on the power play midway through the third period Thursday as the Predators defeated the Canucks 2-1. Vancouvers 25th-ranked power play finished 0 for 5, including a four-minute man advantage in the first period that could have significantly altered the games complexion. Canucks defenceman Dan Hamhuis had a tough game, missing chance after chance from the side of the Nashville net on that sequence. "We had some great looks on the power play early on. We had probably four backdoor opportunities that we didnt finish on," said Canucks assistant coach Mike Sullivan. "I thought our power play did everything tonight except put it in the net." Despite Sullivans positive take, Vancouver is now just 2 for 30 with the man advantage over its last eight games. "We had good chances, good looks. I thought we moved the puck well," said Daniel Sedin, who has now gone 11 games without scoring. "In the end it doesnt really matter right now. Weve got to get some goals. "Its up to us in here to make it happen. No excuses." Craig Smith had the other goal for Nashville (23-22-7), while Carter Hutton made 32 saves as the Predators picked up their fourth victory in the last five outings. Spaling also had an assist. "We got some good goaltending, Carter was really good on those backdoor plays," said Predators coach Barry Trotz, whose team improved to 1-21-2 when trailing after two periods. "They were executing that pretty well. We were having trouble trying to stop that and he got over there a couple times. "It was a good character test. That was huge for us to get through the first period." Chris Higgins had the only goal for Vancouver (26-17-9), which got 24 stops from Roberto Luongo. The Canucks, who still hold down the first wild card spot in the Western Conference, saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end. Down 1-0 after two periods, Nashville tied it at 3:28 of the third when Smith ripped a shot upstairs past Luongo from the faceoff dot off a feed from Spaling for his team-leading 16th goal of the season. "Going into the third when youve got a lead the least you can do is bring it to overtime. Its disappointing," said Luongo. "I need to make a better play on the first one, be more patient on the wrap and read that play a bit better." The Predators kept pushing as the period wore on, with their sixth-ranked power play getting a couple of chances. The Canucks penalty kill -- which sits second in the NHL this season -- held firm until Seth Jones connected with Spaling at 12:38. Jones fired a shot from the point that Spaling tipped past Luongo with just three seconds left on the Nashville man advantage to give the Predators their first lead. Vancouver had another power-play chance late, but couldnt find a way past Hutton. ";The NHL is about a lot of low scoring games," said Luongo.dddddddddddd "Weve got to find ways to win them. Weve got to find ways to bring these games to overtime. Weve got to find ways to protect leads. When we get scored on weve got to keep playing. "Its a tough one to lose going into the third with the lead." After a scoreless first period, Higgins broke the deadlock at 9:09 of the second with his 13th of the season on a nifty deflection. Canucks forward Dale Weise floated a shot towards the Nashville net that Higgins tipped up and over a helpless Hutton for his first goal in seven games. All 13 of Higgins goals have come at even strength and Thursdays effort was just Vancouvers sixth overall in the last six contests. The Canucks power play continued to miss the mark in the second, with defenceman Jason Garrison blasting a shot from the point midway though the period that Hutton handled. "I thought this particular game, the power play had better puck movement and even though we didnt score we got some momentum off of it because at least they had some looks and they had some opportunities, which for me is progress in the right direction," said Sullivan. "The next step is we have to finish. We have to put it in the net." The Canucks were again without head coach John Tortorella, who served the second game of his 15-day suspension for attempting to get into the Calgary Flames locker-room after Saturdays line brawl. Vancouver was also missing captain Henrik Sedin and fellow forward Mike Santorelli. Thought to be nursing rib and finger injuries, Sedin saw his iron man streak of 679 straight games come to an end when he sat out Tuesdays 2-1 road victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Santorelli, meanwhile, missed his third in a row, also with an upper-body injury. Despite their recent run of good form, the Predators still sit eight points back of the final wild card spot in the conference behind the Canucks and Minnesota Wild. "This team has been really resilient all year," said Trotz. "Its been a little bit of an uphill battle all year. This team has got a lot of backbone, a lot of character and this group cares about each other so when things are a little bit rough they dig in and thats a great quality to have." MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Marcus Foster scored 17 points, Nino Williams made two free throws with 5.7 seconds left and Kansas State held off No. 6 Oklahoma State 74-71 on Saturday in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Williams finished with 15 points, none bigger than his two free throws that gave the Wildcats (11-3, 1-0) a three-point lead. Marcus Smart of the Cowboys raced up court and threw up a running 3-point try as the final buzzer sounded, but it clanked harmlessly off the rim and fell to the court. Thomas Gipson added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Kansas State, which has won nine straight after losing to the likes of Northern Colorado and Charlotte earlier in the season. LeBryan Nash scored 20 points, Markel Brown finished with 16 and Smart added 15 for the Cowboys (12-2, 0-1), who were plagued by foul trouble after already missing two of their key players. Michael Cobbins, their best big man, sustained a season-ending Achilles injury on Monday, and freshman guard Stevie Clark -- their second-leading scorer off the bench -- did not play after he was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession on Wednesday. It was a crippling start to the Big 12 season for Oklahoma State, which is hoping to challenge perennial favourite Kansas for the conference title. But it couldnt have been a much better beginning for the Wildcats, who tied the Jayhawks for the regular-season championship a year ago. The Wildcats, whove made a habit of pummeling opponents during their win streak, tried to wear down the short-handed Cowboys in the first half. They pawed and pressed and got physical with Smart and Nash as much as possible, and both of them were clearly frustrated. Both of them also picked up two fouls late in the first half. Kansas State was unable to take advantage of the brief stretch in which both sat on the bench, though. Foster scored in the waning seconds of the half to put the Wildcats in front, but the Cowboys raced up court and Brown managed to curl in a layup at the buzzer for a 38-37 lead. The senior dished a bit of attitude at the Kansas State student section as he left the floor. Oklahoma State tried to extend the lead early in the second half, and Smarts dunk and foul with about 13 1/2 minutes left provided a cushion. But Smart decided to do a chin-up on the rim and slap the backboard after his slam, and he was hit with a technical -- his fourth foul of the game. While he took a seat, the Wildcats started to gather momentum. Shane Southwell hit a 3 from in front of his own bench to knot the game 52-all with just over 9 minutes left, his first points of the game. A few minutes later, Nash picked up his fourth foul, and Cowboys coach Travis Ford put Smart back in the game. The Wildcats went right at him, and Smart wisely backed down on a couple of occasions to avoid picking up his fifth foul. That allowed the Wildcats to surge ahead, taking a 65-60 lead when Foster slashed through the lane and curled in a layup with 3 1/2 minutes remaining. That matched the biggest lead of the game for either team. I wasnt really aware of it until this morning. Coach (Todd Richards) told us we hadnt beaten these guys in a while. So that feels good.It was the sixth game in a row to go past regulation for the Blue Jackets — one shy of the NHL record. The suddenly hot Blue Jackets have a nine-game point streak (8-0-1).Bobrovsky gave all the credit to his teammates. The last nine games, they block shots, they sacrifice and they help out a lot, he said. It doesnt seem like it, that they had (41) shots on goal.Columbus had not beaten the Blackhawks since Feb. 18, 2011, going 0-11-2 during that span.Jack Skille and Kevin Connauton scored goals in regulation for injury-riddled Columbus, which bounced back from the announcement Saturday morning that it wouldnt have star centre Boone Jenner for one to two months due to a stress fracture in his back. The club continues to battle a mountain of injuries to several top players.Big picture, it was a huge two points for us, Richards said. Its been a good December. Well enjoy tonight, definitely because of all the adversity weve faced so far.Patrick Sharp and Ben Smith scored for the Blackhawks, and Corey Crawford made 17 saves in his first game back after miissing the last eight with an ankle injury.ddddddddddddI thought we did everything but win that game tonight, coach Joel Quenneville said. We played well in all areas of the game and did a lot of good things. Ill give their goalie credit. In the shootout, it just didnt happen. With the score tied at 1 heading into the third, the Blue Jackets scored on a holdover power play. Connautons hard, rising shot through traffic beat Crawford for a 2-1 lead. The Blackhawks pulled even after a long review in Toronto.Bobrovsky made the initial save before Chicagos Marcus Kruger — without a stick — dove skates first into the net and kicked the puck. But it went off Connautons stick briefly before Smith, almost behind the cage, reached around to tap it across the goal line at the 8:49 mark. Not initially ruled a goal, it was overturned and Smith had his fifth of the season.Columbus killed two penalties before regulation ended. There was an extra point there for us, Crawford said. That could be a big point at the end of the year. But we missed it tonight.Jeremy Morin, acquired in a trade with the Blackhawks on Sunday, scored the first goal of the shootout in the fifth round. But Andrew Shaw came right back to extend it until the ninth round when Johnson and Bobrovsky came up big.We had some opportunities on power plays late in the game and more chances in the shootout to put it away, Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. We just couldnt quite find the back of the net.NOTES: Chicago returns home to host Toronto on Sunday and Winnipeg on Tuesday. ... Columbus was playing the second of a five-game homestand. ... PHILADELPHIA -- Despite all the changes made in the front office and behind the bench, Ryan Kesler was not satisfied with the Vancouver Canucks path. He still wanted out. "It just seemed like the direction they were going didnt fit what I thought my career was going to be," Kesler said. "At the end of the day I want to win a championship and I want to win it now, and four years is a little too long for me." Not wanting the situation to "fester" like the Roberto Luongo saga did under his predecessor, general manager Jim Benning sought a quick resolution to that problem. He found it Friday by trading Kesler and a 2015 third-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for centre Nick Bonino, defenceman Luca Sbisa and the 24th and 85th picks in this weekends NHL draft. "He just felt he needed a fresh start and quite frankly we dont want somebody that doesnt want to be here," Benning said Friday afternoon before the draft began. "Were going to acquire high-quality people that are going to come in here and want to work hard for one another, so we didnt give it much thought." Kesler, who turns 30 in August, asked for a trade during what he called a "painful" regular season full of losing that ended without a playoff appearance and ultimately cost GM Mike Gillis and coach John Tortorella their jobs. He met with Benning after the season and reiterated that he wanted to go somewhere he could win. But the Livonia, Mich., native wouldnt go anywhere. His full no-trade clause allowed him to dictate his destination, and the only two teams hed approve a trade to were the Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks. Benning said the Canucks asked Kesler and agent Kurt Overhardt about expanding that list, but to no avail. Chicago was "in it right until the end," according to Benning, but it was important to him to get a potential No. 2 centre and a player who could grow into a top-four defenceman. He hopes he has that in the 26-year-old Bonino and 24-year-old Sbisa. Bonino had 49 points this past season -- some of that thanks to playing with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry -- while Kesler had 43. Sbisa missed time with a torn tendon in his hand but has been considered a top prospect since before he was traded to Anaheim from the Philadelphia Flyers for Chris Pronger at the 2009 draft. "Getting Bonino was an important piece ... (for) being able to replace his goal production for our team next year," Benning said. "Getting Luca, he gives us some physical play from the back end. Hes strong. He plays like a heavy game and I think in our division his heaviness is going to come in handy for our group." When Benning wrapped up the Kesler trade Friday afternoon, he was just getting started making moves. The Canucks traded defenceman Jason Garrison to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 50th pick in the draft and then flipped the 85th pick acquired from the Ducks to the New York Rangers for grinder Derek Dorsett. Trading Garrison brings salary-cap relief in the form of $4.6 million over the next four seasons. Acquiring Dorsett means some familiarity, as he played under Desjardins with the WHLs Medicine Hat Tigers. Despite the bevy of moves, Benning refused to call the Canucks approach a "rebuild." "We acquired players that we thought are going to have an impact on us winning next year," he said. "If it was going to be a rebuild then maybe we wouldnt have tried to fight so hard to get players that can come in and help our team win next year." If Kesler believed the Canucks, under the new direction of president Trevor Linden, Benning and coach Willie Desjardins, were going to win next year, he most likely wouldnt have asked to be traded. The 2003 first-round pick had played his entire career with the Canucks, all 655 games worth. But on his post-trade conference call, Kesler made it clear he wouldnt have been happy sticking around. "The fact that theyre in a rebuild and are looking to get younger and are years away from being a contender, I think it was just time for me to move on and win and hopefully take home a championship," Kesler said. Keslers fond memories of Vancouver included getting drafted, scoring his first goal (with an assist from Linden) and going to the Stanley Cup final in 2011. But much has changed since then, and the Canucks are a team in transition. The Ducks, on the other hand, consider themselves Cup contenders now after losing to the eventual-champion Los Angeles Kings in seven games in the Western Conference semifinals. But something had to be done to make that next step. "We knew we needed (a centre to play) behind Ryan Getzlaf," Anaheim GM Bob Murray said. "This is a huge move for our hockey team. Were better today than we were yesterday." Even though Murray was insistent from the beginning of negotiations that the Ducks were not willing to part with the No. 10 pick Friday night, the Canucks built toward being a better team down the line by getting a first-round pick at 24 and stockpiling with others. Vancouver took Calgary Hitmen winger Jake Virtanen, an Abbotsford, B.C., native and Canucks fan through childhood, with the sixth pick. Shoulder surgery will keep Virtanen from being able to take contact until at least the fall, but this was another move designed for the long-term future. In the short term, Kesler gets an opportunity to play behind Getzlaf for a contender, while the Canucks get to move on. "I didnt want this to linger," Benning said. MILAN, Italy -- Roma failed to equal the European record of 11 straight league victories to start the season as a goal from former player Alessio Cerci saw it held to a 1-1 draw at Torino in Serie A on Sunday for its first dropped points of the campaign. Rudi Garcias side had already set a Serie A record by winning its opening 10 matches but was looking to equal the best start in any of the top five European leagues, set by English club Tottenham in 1960-61. "Whats important is that the squad played with heart and quality especially in the first half," Garcia said. "I liked it that we tried to win right up until the end. "This is football, we cant win them all, but a draw away from home is not a negative result." Roma moved three points above Juventus and Napoli, who play each other next week. Inter Milan and newly-promoted Hellas Verona are nine points behind after earlier wins against Udinese and Cagliari respectively. Elsewhere, teenage forward Domenico Berardi scored a hat trick to help Sassuolo beat 10-man Sampdoria 4-3, while Lazio fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Genoa. Roma took the lead in the 28th minute. Federico Balzaretti found Miralem Pjanic on the left side of the area and he cut it back for Kevin Strootman to volley home. Torino levelled shortly after the hour mark when Riccardo Meggiorini robbed the ball off Mehdi Benatia and crossed for Cerci to sidefoot in from close range. It was only the second goal Roma had conceded all season and its first in 743 minutes of football. Meggiorini had gone close to the equalizer minutes earlier with a stunning strike which Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis had to dive at full stretch to save. Earlier, Inter recorded a dominant 3-0 victory at Udinese. Palacio broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when he headed in Saphir Taiders free kick. And it got worse for Udinese four minutes later when Zeljko Brkic completely mistimed his exit and flapped haplessly at Esteban Cambiassos corner, allowing Andrea Ranocchia to volley in at the far post. Fredy Guarin hit the post in the second half before Ricardo Alvarez added a third in stoppage time, slotting Palacios cross into an empty net. "I saw the best Inter performance of the season, even considering the level of the opponent," Inter coach Walter Mazzarri said. "We really wanted to come here and impose our game. I always try to instil that into my players, that we must not let ourselves be conditioned by whether were playing at home or not." Verona also dominated on its way to a sixth successive home victory, winning 2-1 against Cagliari, which has now lost three successive matches. "This Verona side has to think only about working well as it is doing," Verona coach Andrea Mandorlini said. "Its right that the fans are dreaming, but we have to think about staying in this league." Luca Toni headed home a corner in the eighth minute to give Verona an early lead and the home side all but sealed the match 12 minutes into the second half when Bosko Jankovic played a one-two with Romulo before curling into the far corner. Daniele Conti volleyed in a consolation goal for Cagliari in stoppage time. In Rome, Lazio seemed in complete control in the first half and Genoa had goalkeeper Mattia Perin to thank for keeping them in the match with several crucial saves, including a spectacular stop to deny Miroslav Klose. Juraj Kucka broke the deadlock on the hour mark with an angled drive and Genoa doubled its lead 10 minutes later when Alberto Gilardino converted a penalty following a Michael Ciani handball. Newly-promoted Sassuolos match at Sampdoria had already been deemed a relegation dogfight and the home side appeared to be in control after Nicola Pozzi had given it a first half lead. However, the match turned at the start of the first half. Berardi fired in the equalizer before putting Sassulo in front from the penalty spot two minutes later after Andrea Costa had tripped the youngster. Costa was shown a second yellow card and dismissed. Antonio Floro Flores appeared to have secured the match but Samp levelled with goals from Eder and Lorenzo De Silvestri. But it wasnt over yet and Berardi secured Sassuolos second win of the season in the final minute, with another penalty after Shkodran Mustafi fouled Diego Farias. In the lunchtime kickoff, Paulinho scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute as Livorno beat 10-man Atalanta 1-0 to earn its first win in eight matches. Atalanta was forced to play for nearly an hour a man short after Carlos Carmona was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Ibrahima Mbaye. Air Max 97 Off White Wolf Grey Menta . Valtteri Filppula contributed a goal and an assist and Brian Boyle also scored in the Lightnings eighth consecutive victory at Amalie Arena, tying a franchise record set from March 17-April 8, 2006. The win kept Tampa Bay atop the Atlantic Division as it heads into the All- Star break. The penalty kill saved us tonight. Outstanding, said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. Cant say enough about how those guys killed penalties. And when shots got through, Bishop was there to make the save. Ryan Miller, who had yielded just one goal over three straight Vancouver wins prior to Tuesdays clash, surrendered three on 25 shots in the loss. Frank Corrado recorded the Canucks lone goal. We definitely had our chances, we just didnt get it going, said Miller. The game remained scoreless into the second period before Filppula broke the deadlock 6:28 into the stanza. While racing towards the Vancouver net, he collected a deflected centering pass from Steven Stamkos and redirected it past Miller from close range. Bishop protected the one-goal edge by coming up with 12 saves during the second, and the Lightning struck almost instantly in the third to extend the lead.dddddddddddd Killorn received a give from Victor Hedman along the right boards and skated uncontested towards Miller before ripping a shot over the goaltenders shoulder with just 11 seconds elapsed in the frame. Boyle made it a 3-0 game just over four minutes later with a wicked one-timer off a Brett Connolly feed, but Corrado gave Vancouver some brief life by slipping a shot between Bishops pads on a Canucks rush at the 8:09 mark. The Canucks had an opportunity to cut into the deficit further after gaining a 5-on-3 power play for more than a minute, but Tampa Bay killed off both minor penalties to maintain its 3-1 advantage. Miller was pulled for an extra attacker with still over four minutes to go, leading to Killorns empty-net tally with 2:26 left that put an end to any Vancouver comeback hopes. Game Notes The first seven wins during the Lightnings home streak all came by one-goal margins ... Hedman finished with two assists ... Corrados goal was the second of his NHL career, with the first coming against Calgary on April 13 of last season ... Vancouver went 0-for-7 on the power play, including three unsuccessful 5-on-3 situations ... Tampa Bay swept the season series, having earned a 4-2 win in Vancouver on Oct. 18, and has won four straight from the Canucks. ' ' '

The Grizzlies have done it on the defensive end, as expected, this season. After surrendering 101 points in the season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis has allowed 89 and 69 points since. The 69 points allowed came in a two-point road victory Saturday night against the Charlotte Hornets in a game only a mother could love. The Grizzlies big-man combo of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph led the way. Gasol scored a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Randolph chipped in 12 points and 12 boards. Whether it was good defense or bad offense, points were bard to come by. Both teams shot 36 percent from the floor and combined for 39 turnovers -- 20 coming from Charlotte. I am really proud of our guys. To go 2-1 on your first week, Id be high- fiving you, but to go 3-0 and beating Indiana on the road is very good. Charlotte is a top-five team in the east, said Memphis coach Dave Joerger. Courtney Lee sat out the game with concussion symptoms and could be available Monday night. Jrue Holiday scored 24 points and Tyreke Evans narrowly missed a triple-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Omer Asik managed 13 points and nine boards, while Ryan Anderson chipped in 11 off the bench. The Pelicans fell down 14 at the half as they looked sluggish. New Orleans hadnt played since opening the season on Tuesday night, but it was a different Pelicans team in the second half. New Orleans dominated the third quarter to the tune of a 37-20 scoring disparity. The Pelicans took the lead to start the last, but Dallas won the final 12 minutes, 23-15. I was really encouraged and excited by the way we played in the second half, Pelicans coach Monty Williams said after Sundays practice. Maybe the three days off, four days off hurt us a little bit, Im not sure. We have to learn to deal with that. The Pelicans won three of four against the Grizzlies last season, including both trips to Beale Street. ' ' '
MEXICO CITY -- Mexico coach Jose Manuel De la Torre was fired and replaced by Luis Fernando Tena on Saturday within hours of an embarrassing home loss to Honduras in World Cup qualifying. Mexico lost 2-1 to Honduras on Friday, only its second ever loss in World Cup qualifying matches at Estadio Azteca, and the first since 2001 when Costa Rica won a match remembered in Mexico as the "Aztecazo." The Mexican federation wasted little time after the match firing De la Torre and choosing his replacement, as it sent out a press release with the details at about 3 a.m. on Saturday. Tena, who was one of De la Torres top assistants, has won the Mexican league twice and guided Mexico to the gold medal at the London Olympics, one of the biggest sports achievements in Mexicos history. It was Mexicos first Olympic medal in team sports since a bronze in basketball in 1936. Tena was to be introduced late Saturday at Centro de Alto Rendimiento. Mexico is fourth in the six-team CONCACAF final qualifying group. Only the top three qualify for the finals in Brazil next year, while the fourth will go into a playoff series against Oceania winner New Zealand. Mexico has not missed a World Cup since 1990. "I want to thank whatever slap---- threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jack---," Jones tweeted. Jones went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI on Sunday. "We were extremely disappointed to learn about the incident involving Adam Jones at AT&T Park yesterday," the teams statement read. "The Giants have a zero tolerance policy against this type of behavior, which results in immediate ejection from the ballpark. The fan in question is reportedly Alexander Poulides, who told the San Jose Mercury News he grabbed the banana off a catering cart and hurled it toward the field in disgust near the end of the game. Poulides told the newspaper the incident was not racially motivated and his action for the banana toss was not at Jones, but toward the Giants and "their poor performance." Poulides said he was "embarrassed and shocked by the outcome," according to the newspaper. "In hindsight, I wish I didnt do it and I apologize. Im very sorry," he told the Mercury News. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- David Lee had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Klay Thompson scored 18 points and the Golden State Warriors held off the Sacramento Kings 101-92 on Wednesday night in a game both teams played short-handed. Stephen Curry added 13 points and eight assists for the Warriors (32-22) in the first game following the All-Star break for each team. Golden State is 3-0 against Sacramento this season. With both centres out with injuries and a shorter roster from trades each team made earlier in the day, the depth of the Warriors was just too much for the Kings to overcome. Isaiah Thomas had 26 points and seven assists, and Travis Outlaw scored 18 points for a Sacramento (18-36) team thats headed for an eighth straight losing season. Quincy Acy grabbed a career-high 12 boards to help the Kings outrebound the Warriors 49-35, but Sacramento committed 21 turnovers, fading in the closing minutes. The game was played in the aftermath of a busy day for both Northern California teams. The Kings traded guard Marcus Thornton to Brooklyn for veterans Jason Terry and Reggie Evans in the afternoon. Just before tipoff, the Warriors acquired point guard Steve Blake from the Los Angeles Lakers for reserves Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks. Andrew Bogut also missed his fifth straight game for the Warriors with a left shoulder injury. DeMarcus Cousins, who strained his left hip flexor in Sacramentos final game before the break in New York, also sat out. Both centres are day to day. The Kings dropped to 0-8 without Cousins this season but still led 76-75 entering the fourth quarter. The Warriors quickly put together a pair of scoring spurts to pull away. Lee converted a layup through traffic, Thompson made a 3-pointer and Andre Iguodala hit a fadeway jumper in an 8-0 run that gave Golden State an 86-79 lead early in the fourth. After the Kings started to rally, Iguodala found Draymond Green for a dunk, and Lee followed with a layup that put the Warriors up 94-84 with 3:28 remaining that all but sealed it. Most of the game played out in similar fashion. The Warriors went ahead by 10 points in the first quarter and 15 in the second, spreading the floor and moving the ball fast without any true centres on the court. The Kings had come back each time, though, playing just like the two-faced team theyd been before the All-Streak break -- prone to scintillating scoring spurts but, at times, lacking defence and discipline -- that buried them at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Sacramento scored the final nine points of the third quarter, including the last six by Thomas, to take a 76-75 lead before the Warriors pulled away for good. Teheran pitched 7 1-3 innings and had two hits Friday night to help the Atlanta Braves move a game ahead of Miami atop the NL East by beating the Marlins 3-2. The right-hander doubled to lead off the seventh, and the Braves went on to score twice in the inning to take the lead. "I felt I had to start a rally, and just tried to put the ball in play," Teheran said. "I think that was the biggest play of the game." The Braves trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning but rallied to break a four-game losing streak. "I know weve been losing," Teheran (5-3) said. "Its nice to do my job and help the team." Teheran allowed five hits and two runs, which raised his ERA to 1.83. He came into the game 2 for 25 this season and hiked his batting average to .143. The right-hander improved to 4-0 in six career starts against the Marlins with an ERA of 2.50. "Hes a stud," teammate Chris Johnson said. "He earned this one. He had our backs, and we got him just enough." Three relievers combined to complete a five-hitter. Craig Kimbrel, who took the loss Thursday at Boston, pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances. The Braves won for only the third time in their past 13 road games. They totalled just eight hits but had several lineouts. "We hit the ball harder than any other game this year," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We were hitting rockets right at people all night long. The score wasnt indicative of how well we swung the bat." Giancarlo Stanton hit his NL-leading 16th home run in the first inning to put the Marlins up 2-0, but Tom Koehler (4-5) couldnt hold the lead. He gave up three runs in seven innings and was annoyed to allow four walks. "Its tough to win ballgames wwhen youre giving a team extra opportunities," he said.dddddddddddd The Marlins lost for only the second time in their past 13 games against NL East teams. Freddie Freeman went hitless and struck out three times. He is 0 for 28 with 12 strikeouts against Miami this year and is batting .347 against the rest of the majors. With the Braves trailing 2-1 to start the seventh, Gonzalez said it was a no-brainer to let Teheran hit, in part because the teams bullpen was stretched thin. Teheran rewarded the decision with an opposite-field double. Jason Heyward followed with a run-scoring triple, and B.J. Uptons sacrifice fly drove in an unearned run to put the Braves ahead. Johnson singled home Atlantas first run in the sixth. While the Braves liked the way Teheran hit, they were more impressed with the 23-year-olds pitching. "The more he goes out there, the more impressed I get -- his demeanour and how he goes about his business," Gonzalez said. "You watch him grow up in front of your face." Teherans only glaring mistake was a hanging slider to Stanton, whose homer was a typical tape-measure job. It cleared the hedge beyond the 418-foot sign in centre field, ending a streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings for Teheran. He started a new streak the next inning. "He was throwing four or five different pitches and commanding them all," Miamis Ed Lucas said. "He does a really good job changing speeds, especially for somebody who is as young as he is. Hes got a really good feel for pitching." The Marlins, who began the night with the best home record in baseball, fell to 20-9 at Marlins Park. NOTES: Miami C Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 0 for 3 and is in a 1-for-18 slump. ... RHP Ervin Santana (4-2, 4.06) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Braves against Miami RHP Jacob Turner (1-2, 5.35). ' ' '
ATLANTA -- When Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed found out a neighbouring community had made a generous offer to help finance a new Braves stadium, he balked and said the city simply couldnt compete. Reeds decision comes a few months after the mayor faced tough criticism for pushing through a plan to use public money to support a new NFL stadium downtown. And it underscores the challenges facing cash-strapped communities nationwide as they weigh the risks and rewards of using public money to help finance major sports venues. "The bottom line is that the city was presented with a choice, and that choice was encumbering between $150 million to $250 million in debt and not having money to do anything else," Reed said, referring to the citys share of costs for desired improvements at Turner Field. Instead, the mayor announced Tuesday that Turner Field would be demolished when the Braves leave in 2017, making way for a new large-scale development. Reed has said the city couldnt match Cobb Countys offer of $450 million in public support to the Braves, though the team disputes that figure. When faced with the question of how much to contribute to stadium construction or refurbishment, local leaders have to weigh the state of their communitys finances. In Atlantas case, Reed said the city has a $900 million backlog in infrastructure projects. There have been instances of communities not putting up public money, but those are the exception, said Judith Grant Long, an associate professor of urban planning at Harvard University. Most notable is the current home of the San Francisco Giants, which was the first privately financed major league stadium in decades. On the other end of the spectrum, Long pointed to the $975 million Minnesota Vikings stadium project. There, the public contribution has been estimated at $498 million. "The impact of the recent recession on state and local tax revenues, and consequently fiscal management, should influence thinking about all new capital projects and the role of public debt," Long said. The new 42,000-seat Braves stadium would be located about 10 miles north of downtown and cost $672 million to build. Reed has said he was informed of the $450 million in public financing during a meeting with the team, but the Braves said the costs havent been finalized and "reports of this figure are erroneous." Cobb County appears to have at least three financing options that would not involve raising taxes on residents, including a hotel/motel tax that brought in $10 million in revenue last year, a community improvement district that pools money from area businesses for infrastructure projects and a budget surplus. The proposal does include options for commercial development, including restaurants, retail, hotel and entertainment facilities that would surround the stadium and also would boost revenues. Details on the public funding are expected to be released in the next few weeks. In defending his decision, Reed argued the Braves situation was much different than the citys plan to contribute at least $200 million in public funding to support a new $1.2 billion, retractable-roof stadium for the Atlanta Falcons. Reed said the Falcons deal will use the citys hotel/motel tax for improvements to state-owned property where the NFL stadium will be built. There was no such funding mechanism for the Braves, so any contributions would have forced the city to take on significant debt, Reed said. "It doesnt mean I dont want the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta," Reed said. "Were not going to put the city on its back financially." Reed touted the publics relatively small share of costs for the NFL stadium. Long said that was lower than the average of about 70 per cent in public money for stadium projects. William Perry, executive director of the government watchdog group Common Cause Georgia, was a vocal critic of the mayor for not seeking more public input on the Falcons stadium deal. He said this week that the mayor appeared to be applying inconsistent logic by fighting for the Falcons but letting the Braves leave. Braves executives said the decision to leave Turner Field was based on several factors, including $150 million needed to replace seats and pay for other upgrades as well as another $200 million to improve the fan experience. The team cited a lack of mass transit options in the area, too few parking spaces and limited freeway access. "Our new location will give us the opportunity to develop the surrounding area of the new ballpark, transforming it into a mixed use, 365-day destination and creating an enhanced atmosphere for our fans during Braves games," the team said in a statement. Studies have shown stadium projects create only modest increases in overall tax revenue and job creation, Long said, although more teams are taking a role in developing lodging, entertainment and retail around the venues. "In part, this is evidence of a trend where teams are more interested in development around the stadium as part of their evolving business model," Long said, adding that it can also help with gaining approval. "However, these urban development benefits ... are slow to materialize." For Cobb County, the benefits of the project are clearly worth any risk. "This makes Cobbs marketability so much stronger, and it helps us become more than a suburban community," said Brooks Mathis, an executive with the Cobb Chamber of Commerce who helped negotiate the deal. "We are going to see huge benefits for many, many years to come especially having such a wonderful organization like the Braves be a part of our community." Seems to me that he was questioning the integrity and impartiality.ARLINGTON, Texas -- Kole Calhoun is embracing his role leading off for the Los Angeles Angels. And hes doing it well. Calhoun opened the game with a single and added a double before his tiebreaking, three-run homer that put the Angels ahead to stay in a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night, when Garrett Richards worked into the eighth inning for his 13th win. "I want to be a catalyst for the offence, get on base, score some runs," Calhoun said by phone after initially making a quick exit from the clubhouse after the game. "I want so bad to get on base. ... Im having fun right there." Calhoun, who finished a triple shy of the cycle, was also hit by a pitch. He had multiple hits for the fifth time in his last six games. "He kind of flies under the radar, but I dont know if there are too many leadoff men as dynamic as Kole has been," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Richards (13-4), who struck out seven without a walk in 7 1-3 innings, has won all four of his starts this season against Texas. The right-hander allowed two runs while scattering seven hits. "Hes been the same every time," said Adrian Beltre, who got three of his four hits off Richards. Angels catcher Chris Iannetta said Richards is "coming into his own." "Were just seeing him mature," Iannetta said. "Hes got great stuff, and hes starting to command it more." The Angels led for good after Calhouns 412-foot shot off Nick Martinez (2-9) into the second deck of seats in right field made it 4-1 in the fifth. Another run scored when Calhoun grounded into a double play in the seventh. Huston Street worked a perfect ninth for his eighth save in as many chances since the Angels acquired him. He has 11 scoreless innings in 11 games since the July 18 trade from San Diego, where he had 24 saves. Martinez struck out six while allowing four runs and six hits in six innings. "Just one unexecuted pitch, the one to Calhoun. He wanted to go down and away, and ended up pulling it across the middle of the plate," Texas manager Ron Washington said.dddddddddddd "Other than that, I thought he did a swell job." STRIKE THREE -- TIMES FOUR Josh Hamilton was 1 for 5 with four strikeouts, the hit an opposite-field bloop single off a pitcher making his major league debut. Hamilton is 5 for 38 (.132) over his last 10 games, and without an RBI in his last nine. "Were not seeing the aggressive Josh Hamilton that we saw when he played for Texas. Were not seeing that," Scioscia said. "Theres a lot of things that hes trying. Josh is working very hard, and nobody feels worse than Josh. We need him in the middle of our lineup doing what he can do." PRODUCTIVE BOTTOM David Freese and Iannetta, the bottom two batters in the Angels lineup, were a combined 5 for 7 with four runs. Calhouns 13th homer came after Freese and Iannetta started the fifth with consecutive singles. Freese has an 11-game hitting streak. ONE BAD NIGHT Angels reliever Kevin Jepsen has been spectacular lately, allowing only two earned runs over 39 innings in his previous 44 games. But the right-hander gave up two runs while getting only one out after relieving Richards in the eighth. Jepsen leads the majors with 54 scoreless appearances. TRAINERS ROOM Angels: Rookie RHP Mike Morin is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, the first day the reliever is eligible to come back after missing 13 games with a cut on his left foot. Morin threw a scoreless inning for Class A Inland Empire on Thursday night before joining the team in Texas. He is 3-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 41 games. Rangers: Alex Rios was back in RF for the first time since Sunday, when he re-aggravated a right ankle sprain on a slide. After being the DH the previous two games, he did some early work in the field before starting in the outfield. UP NEXT Los Angeles goes for its ninth consecutive win against the Rangers, which would match its longest streak in the series, a mark set from 1985-86. Matt Shoemaker tries to become the Angels third 11-game winner in the middle game of the weekend set. Colby Lewis (8-9) starts for Texas. ' ' '
Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - James Harden made a career-high eight 3- pointers and scored 36 points to help the Houston Rockets beat the Charlotte Hornets, 102-83, on Wednesday. Harden also had seven rebounds and six assists for the Rockets, who snapped a two-game skid. He has scored at least 28 points in his last five games. I felt real comfortable. My shot felt good all night, Harden said. Patrick Beverley and Donatas Motiejunas added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for Houston, which went 17-of-43 from beyond the arc. Dwight Howard contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Gerald Henderson each scored 16 points for the Hornets, who have lost four in a row on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Kemba Walker ended with 12 points and five assists. Their defense is good, really good actually, Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. Tonight just taking care of the ball was an issue. The Hornets led for a majority of the first half and held a 45-41 edge with 49.8 seconds left. But Harden and Beverley made 3-pointers to give Houston a two-point lead at the break. Beverley scored the first eight points of the third quarter to make it a 55-45 game. The Rockets maintained their lead and took a 76-68 margin into the fourth. Houston led by as many as 20 in the final frame. Game Notes The Rockets have won eight straight against the Hornets and 10 in a row as the host ... Charlotte went 3-of-18 from beyond the arc ... Pagenaud won the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on Saturday, the first IndyCar Series race on IMS road course, by stretching his fuel the final 29 laps. The Frenchman was one of several drivers to gamble on gas, and he took the lead when Oriol Servia had to stop with four laps remaining. Pagenaud managed to make it to the finish for his third series victory despite having to keep an eye on his mirrors. Ryan Hunter-Reay was second and Helio Castroneves third on his 39th birthday. "Man I didnt know what we were asking for, but we made fuel," Pagenaud said in Victory Lane. "The fuel saving was amazing. It was nerve-wracking. I was worried about RHR coming back, and I didnt know what Helio was doing here. I dont like racing off throttle." Sebastien Bourdais and Charlie Kimball rounded out the top five. Hinchcliffe, of Oakville, Ont., was taken from the track on a stretcher and transported to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion after he was hit in the head with debris. A replay appeared to show debris from a car in front of him flew into his cockpit following a restart. IndyCar said hell have to be re-evaluated before hes cleared again to drive. Preparations begin Sunday for the Indianapolis 500, with qualifying scheduled to begin next Saturday for the May 25 race. IndyCar policy in the past has been to hold a driver with a concussion out of the car a minimum of seven days. Andretti Autosport said EJ Viso will be the standby driver for Hinchcliffe. "Im a little stiff and sore and Id love to be back in the car tomorrow, but I suppose I should probably let the doctors make that decision," Hinchcliffe said in a statement. Hunter-Reay said he drove by Hinchcliffes car and couldnt figure out what happened. "I was actually next to him on track and all of a sudden debris went everywhere and he slowed up," Hunter-Reay said about his teammate. "It was something that happened in front of him and he was hit." The race began with a violent wreck when pole-sitter Sebastian Saavedra stalled on the standing start. He was hit by multiple cars, and debris struck Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard as he waved the green flag. Saavedras car siimply didnt go when the lights went out and, after Hunter-Reay frantically darted around him, Saavedra was clipped by Carlos Munoz and then hit hard from behind by Mikhail Aleshin.dddddddddddd "We just followed protocol at the start," Saavedra said. "As soon as I released the clutch, it went from 11,000 rpm to zero. This should not have happened, unfortunately." The initial hit from Munoz didnt seem too bad, but Aleshins direct hit sprayed debris all over the track, sending spectators and track workers standing along the wall scrambling for cover. Saavedra was seen in his cockpit with his arms in the air anticipating a potential collision as cars tried to weave their way around his stalled KV Racing car. He was visibly upset after the accident as he talked to his team on his pit stand. He had won the first pole of his career -- in part because Hunter-Reay had his two fastest laps disallowed for causing a caution in Fridays qualifying -- and was looking for a strong finish at the famed race track. "Man, we had an opportunity to be at the front of the pack in this amazing place. We wanted to bring it home in the same place," he said. "To not even get a chance because of a freaking electrical thing ..." It had many drivers complaining about the standing starts, which have been problematic since IndyCar began using them at some tracks last season. The incident damaged several cars one day before teams begin practice for the May 25 Indianapolis 500. "I think IndyCar has had like two good standing starts since we started them last year," said driver/owner Ed Carpenter, who saw Mike Conway have to take his car to the garage for repairs after the accident. "Havent been a fan, still not a fan." Drivers also grumbled about the way race control was restarting the races, with the leader having to use a late restart zone. Graham Rahal said he was victimized when he was run into from behind by Juan Pablo Montoya. "These restarts are pretty stupid. You cant see back there because the rear wings are so big, and the officials, we need to work with them to try to change this because theres going to be a lot of accidents," Rahal said. "I said the restart before, I said to my dad, Somebodys going to get hurt out here because you cant see. "They need to let the leader go earlier. Right now, the way it is, theyre trying to be like NASACAR and this isnt NASCAR. We cant just bump-draft each other." ' ' '
BARCELONA, Spain - Athletic Bilbao strengthened its hold on fourth place in the Spanish league by winning 2-0 at Real Betis on Sunday after the bottom side had two players dismissed. Bilbaos first victory in four rounds lifted it four points clear of Real Sociedad and kept it in command of Spains last Champions League berth for next season. In contrast, Betis was left 11 points from safety after a dismal performance that at times bordered on self-destruction amid some questionable refereeing decisions. Seconds after Betis Ruben Castro was booked for diving in the area, Bilbao forward Iker Muniain scored from a spot kick in the 34th minute after Damien Perquis tripped Kike Sola from behind on the edge of the area. Another reckless tackle by Perquis earned him a second yellow card in the 41st to completely deflate the crowd at Benito Villamarin Stadium. Betis was left with nine men from the 58th when Lorenzo Reyes handled the ball after he had already been booked for arguing. Bilbao squandered several scoring chances until substitute Guillermo Fernandez headed in the first ball he touched in the 81st. Betis has won one game in the last 18 rounds despite having three different coaches this season. "It was an ugly game," said Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde. "My team pulled out a win thanks to the setbacks suffered by the other side. Playing against nine I still had the sensation that the game was evenly matched. Our forwards could have done a little more for us." Also, Valencia and Sevilla both won to move to within five points of sixth place and Spains last Europa League spot. Valencia needed an injury-time goal from 19-year-old defender Ruben Vezo in his first start to complete a 2-1 comeback win at home over a feisty Granada. Francisco "Piti" Medina put Granada ahead in the 47th, but as the visitors tired Valencia substitute Paco Alcacer tapped in Sofiane Feghoulis pass to level in the 64th. Valencia kept pressing and Vezo volleyed in a free kick headed on by a defender to claim the hard-fought win. Sevilla won 1-0 at Rayo Vallecano to end a six-game winless streak. After a drab first half by both sides, fullback Jorge "Coke" Andujar headed home Ivan Rakitics free kick to grab the 57th-minute winner at Vallecas Stadium. Unai Emerys team played the last seven minutes with 10 men after Vicente Iborra received his second booking for taking too long to leave the pitch after receiving medical assistance. Rayo remained in second-to-last place and five points from safety after conceding its league worst 59th goal in 25 games. "This was not a day to lose," Rayo defender Jose Castro said. Arrival… Upon joining from Leeds in November 1992, Cantonas impact was instant. He swaggered in, said Sir Alex Ferguson, stuck his chest out, raised his head and surveyed everything as though saying: Im Cantona. How big are you? Are you big enough for me?Goal v Chelsea in Dec 1992… Picking up the knockdown from Lee Sharpes cross, he swivelled to finish and mark his Manchester United debut with a goal. Aura… Cantona had an effect on team-mates as well as his manager. He just had that aura and presence about him, Paul Ince told Sky Sports. He took the responsibility away from us players, it was like he said Im Eric, and Im here to win the title for you.Goal v Tottenham in Jan 1993… Expertly looped a header over Erik Thorstvedt from Denis Irwins left-wing cross to open the scoring for United in their 4-1 win.Entertainer… Love him or loathe him, Cantona was box office and lit up the early years of the Premier League. In my eyes, he was responsible for the Premier League developing as quickly as it did, said Peter Schmeichel. Everyone took to him, controversy or not.Goal v Manchester City in Mar 1993… A powerful header low into the net from a left-wing cross, this was his first derby goal and an equaliser that secured United an important point. Cantona celebrates scoring a derby goal against Manchester City in 1993 Charisma… Sometimes he didnt even need to do anything. Cantona led by his presence more than anything else, said Roy Keane. His charisma. Gary Neville agreed, saying: Hell always have a place in the hearts of the fans because of his charisma and his daring.Goal v Southampton in Aug 1993… Collecting a pass on the left edge of the penalty box, he deftly chipped the goalkeeper to score Uniteds second in a 3-1 away win at The Dell.Misunderstood… Despite the outward demeanour, that did not translate itself to cockiness off the pitch. He wasnt arrogant at all but polite and considered, said Neville. He always remained real. He drove a modest car, lived in a modest house in Salford.Goal v Arsenal in Sep 1993… One of his best, a rocket of an effort from an indirect free-kick to beat David Seaman and give United a 1-0 win over the Gunners at Old Trafford.Focus… There was an intensity to his approach that was alien to some of his team-mates. He spent a few days in a hotel just focusing on the games, Andrei Kanchelskis told Sky Sports. He was a little bit strange, but that is Eric Cantona.Goal v Queens Park Rangers in Oct 1993… A fine solo effort, nicking the ball away from one marker before running into space, cutting inside and firing low into the corner of the net.Commitment… He would come in at half past nine in the morning - an hour before us lot - do his own warm-up and practise his skills and his touches, said Ince. By the end of the season, there were about eight or nine players joining him at half past nine.Goal v Manchester City in Nov 1993… After a bit of ball juggling to start the move, he also finished it off neatly at the far post. It was part of a brace in a 3-2 win at Maine Road.Desire… Cantonas determination to put in the hard yards was obvious in training - he was anxious to get better despite his status as the teams most talented player. He trained as hard as lesser players and strived for improvement, said Neville.Goal v Sheffield United in Dec 1993… Not his most famous goal against the Blades, but this left-footed effort after running onto a Ryan Giggs pass from his own half was impressive enough.Influence… He had a massive influence on my career as a young player coming into the team, Giggs told Sky Sports. We struck up a good relationship and he ruled Old Trafford for five years. He was unbelievable to play with, watch in games and in training.Goal v Wimbledon in Feb 1994… This famous strike while wearing the green and yellow away kit, saw him collect a clearance, flick the ball up and volley into the net from distance. Cantona in Manchester Uniteds 3-0 win against Wimbledon in 1994 Legacy… Cantonas way of working affected the work of others for years to come. David Beckham told Sky Sports: When I first came into the team at United, we used to watch Eric stay behind later than any player, practising every day, and it rubbed off on us.Goal v Chelsea in May 1994… The first of two FA Cup final penalties to send Chelsea keeper Dmitri Kharine the wrong way, putting United on the path to a 4-0 win and a first double.Culture… Ferguson had worked for years to change the mood around Old Trafford but Cantona brought a new attitude to winning. This guy changed everything for us, Schmeichel told Sky Sports. It was a different approach to games. Unbelievable.Goal v Manchester City in Nov 1994… Collecting a long pass with his right foot and finishing strongly with his left, this goal was the opener in an emphatic 5-0 derby win at Old Trafford.Standards… He was a perfectionist, said Neville. Eric could make an average pass look brilliant. But even the slightest mishit, or a lost tackle, would earn you a glare. Youd feel two inches tall. A mistake was a crime in that team.Goal v Norwich in Dec 1994… A quick lay-off to Brian McClair was followed by a neat spin to receive the return pass as he netted the only goal in a home win over the Canaries.Inspiration… While Cantona put pressure on his team-mates by expecting the best, it was something they responded to. You didnt feel belittled, it just made you strive to do better, said Neville. We were desperate to impress him.Goal v Sheffield United in Jan 1995… In space on the right channel, this wonderfully executed wedge over the goalkeeper ranks among the Frenchmans finest goals. Cantona in action during an FA Cup tie gainst Sheffield United at Bramall Lane Transsformation… Cantona was joining a club that had not won a title for a quarter of a century.dddddddddddd. It was pressure but he was unfazed. It took those qualities to shoulder the responsibility of finally bringing the title to Old Trafford after 26 years, said Neville.Goal v Liverpool in Oct 1995… A routine penalty, this goal was symbolic nevertheless as he marked his return from a nine-month ban by earning a point for his side at Anfield.Belief… His confidence aided achievement. When he came to the club I knew wed win the title, said Ince. There was no European trophy with United, but Cantona did predict the success that followed. Eric told us we were going to become kings of Europe, said Neville.Goal v Sheffield Wednesday in Dec 1995… This game saw him score his first goals at Old Trafford in almost a year with the second a particularly sweet strike into the corner.Titles… The 1995/96 overhauling of Newcastle owed much to Cantona. We were struggling, Schmeichel admitted to Sky Sports. For some reason we didnt play the way we should, but we kept winning games 1-0. He scored all of them.Goal v Newcastle in Mar 1996… This volley, struck low into the ground, separated the sides at St James Park and helped turn the tide in a memorable title race. Cantona scores the only goal of the game against Newcastle in 1996 Penalties… Eighteen of Cantonas 82 United goals came from the spot. He only missed twice and scored afterwards in both games. His technique of watching the goalkeeper was very effective with the keeper also diving the wrong way 90 per cent of the time (18 of 20).Goal v Arsenal in Mar 1996… David Seaman came for the ball but didnt claim and Uniteds No 7 responded by blasting the ball home off the underside of the bar for a vital 1-0 win.Headers… For all his reputation as a player of sublime skills, Cantonas heading ability cannot be overlooked either. He offered a real target, scoring 13 of his United goals with his head and often powering past his markers to force the ball home from close range.Goal v Tottenham in Mar 1996… Another important goal in a 1-0 win as he collected the ball on his chest, taking it away from two markers before tucking away neatly with his left foot.Bravery… Vinnie Jones tried to do Cantona, said Ferguson, recalling a Wimbledon clash in 1994. All our players ran towards Jones, but Cantona said, Leave him alone. Then he patted Jones on the back as if to say, You can kick me if you like but you wont stop me.Goal v Liverpool in May 1996… An underrated finish while leaning back, this late winner in the FA Cup final against Uniteds great rivals secured the clubs second double. Cantona scoring the wining goal against Liverpool in the 1996 FA Cup Final Temper… The kung-fu kick at Crystal Palace earned infamy but United supporters - and the club - stood by their man. That temper is part of the legend, said Neville. People loved him because he did, and said, things they would love to have got away with.Goal v Wimbledon in Aug 1996… A game remembered for David Beckhams late goal from the halfway line, Cantonas early effort, dismissively smashed home, set United on their way.Fear… The mystique that Cantona was able to build around himself meant that nobody at the club could relax too much. Respect for him contained a little dash of fear because we had all seen how he could erupt, said Neville.Goal v Nottingham Forest in Sep 1996… Having had a free-kick squared to him by Giggs, he set himself before drilling low into the bottom corner in a 4-1 win at Old Trafford.Fighter… Cantona led the fight in more ways than one, particularly when struck by police at Galatasaray. Eric was steaming, said Neville. [His team-mates] had to drag Eric in and hold him there. They ended up walking him to the coach to stop him going after the police. Cantona spent five seasons at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, scoring 82 goals in 185 first-team appearances Goal v Sunderland in Dec 1996… Perhaps his most famous goal, twisting and turning away from two before exchanging passes with McClair and lofting the ball into the top corner.Special… He was the only player I saw who the manager never had a go at, said Andy Cole. We all went to a film premiere and were told to wear black ties. Eric turned up in a cream lemon suit and Nike trainers. The manager told him he looked fantastic.Goal v Southampton in Feb 1997… His last winner at Old Trafford, stretching at the far post to reach Giggs left-wing cross and force the ball home first time.Incomparable… Perhaps there have been better players since but even Cristiano Ronaldo could not compete when it comes to hero worship. He could never have matched the idolatry that came with Cantona, admitted Ferguson.Goal v Derby in Apr 1997… A sublime first touch, bringing the ball down from the sky, was the highlight of this goal as he nudged the ball away from his marker before finishing well.Retirement… He played his last game aged 29. He had so much more to give, Ince told Sky Sports. Others saw the positive side. Thered be no diminishing of his legend, no slide into mediocrity, said Neville. He certainly left us wanting more, which isnt a bad way to go.Goal v Blackburn in Apr 1997… His final goal for the club came at Ewood Park after great work by Andy Cole and he celebrated wildly with the travelling United support. This week, collegiate players from across Canada participated in three regional combines in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. Those who impressed in each of the three events were asked to attend the main CFL Combine which begins Friday in Toronto. TSNs Duane Forde gives his thoughts on this weeks regionals, who impressed and who to look out for in Toronto this weekend. EDMONTON - Twenty-one draft eligible players participated in Mondays Edmonton regional combine with five of them advancing to the national combine in Toronto. The most impressive among them was Simon Fraser receiver Tore Corrado. Having established himself more as a kick returner than as a receiver at the NCAA Division II-level, Corrados quickness is his greatest strength. His skill set gives him an opportunity to be an effective player on the bigger Canadian field. Corrados SFU teammate Dylan Roper turned scouts heads early in the day when he hoisted 225 lbs. 26 times. The defensive end clinched his trip to Toronto in the one-on-one drills, where his quickness off the edge and non-stop motor were evident. The Regina Rams also had two players promoted to the main combine in guard Kyle Paterson and defensive end Michael Dadzie. The latter hails from the athletic hotbed of Brampton, Ontario and, although he wasnt a full-time starter for the Rams, he possesses a combination of strength and speed that intrigues scouts. Paterson hopes to continue following in the footsteps of fellow Weyburn, Saskatchewan natives and U of R products Brendon LaBatte and Brett Jones. He topped the bench press test with 27 reps and was clearly the most athletic O-lineman in attendance. Rounding out the national combine invitees was rock solid Manitoba linebacker Thomas Miles, who tested well and brings an element of physical play to the table. My honourable mentions from the Edmonton regional go to scrappy Manitoba receiver Andrew Smith, who combines good leaping ability with a willingness to compete in the air for every ball, and Calgary kicker John Mark, who wasnt as accurate as usual, but hit the ball well on every field goal attempt. MONTREAL - There were twenty-seven draft eligible performers among the participants at Wednesdays Montreal regional combine, five of whom earned their way to the national event. Nigel Romick of Saint Marys distinguished himself in a very competitive defensive line group, testing very well across the board and showing great versatility by taking one-on-one reps at tackle, end and even linebacker. Sherbrooke receiver Francis Lapointe, one of the favourites among scouts entering the combine, lived up to his advance billing, running solid pass routes and tying for the fastest 40-yard dash of the day. Two running backs with very different skill sets will also be moving on to the national stage. Bruising fullback Alexandre Dupuis of the Montreal Carabins came back last fall from injuries to both knees that had wiped out his 2012 campaign and continued to impress with his work ethic and toughness. Meanwhile, Lavals shifty Guillaume Bourassa, who has always had to share time in the crowded Rouge et Or backfield, shone as both a receiver and blocker. Performing on the Concordia University field that he has called home for the last four years, Stingers linebacker Travis Bent also punched his ticket to Toronto. The native of Ajax, Ontario was one of the most heavily recruited players in this class coming out of high school. A number of other players also caught my eye in Montreal, led by Mount Allisons Quinn Everett, who shows good potential as an O-lineman after spending the last four years on the defensive side. Defensive linemen Vincent Desloges (Laval), Shaquille Armstrong (Concordia) and Sanmi Adereti (St.FX) all had their moments, as did receivers Nathan Heather and Mike Harrington, while McGill DB Mattey Ossom and Bishops LB Omar Smith-Jackson displayed outstanding athleticism. TORONTO - On Thursday, Toronto was home to the third and final regional combine with 25 draft eligible prospects on hand. Four would ultimately earn promotions to this weekends national combine, led by former St.FX defensive back Raye Hartmann. An AUS All-Star in 2011, Hartmann had sat out the last two seasons, but showed absolutely no signs of rust as the 62" Mississauga, Ontario native was dominant in pass coverage and excelled in testing. Big Queens receiver Scott MacDonell was equally impressive, using his 65", 225 lbs. frame to his advantage in one-on-ones. He runs well for his size and could certainly contribute at the next leavel with most teams, at least occasionally, employing a tight end package. The day got off to a bit of a rough start for Toronto running back Aaron Milton, when he raised some eyebrows by declining to do the bench press test, later citing a shoulder injury. The big back more than made up for it on the field, showing both explosiveness as a ball carrier and receiver, as well as a willingness to get his nose dirty in blocking drills. High-energy defensive end James Tuck of the York Lions snagged the other invitation, combining an impressive level of athleticism with an even more impressive effort level. Winnipeg-born, Texas-raised offensive lineman Tchissakid Player of Northwestern State was a virtual lock to claim a spot at the main combine until a pulled hamstring ruled him out. Strong-legged kicker Zack Medeiros (Western), waterbug receiver Quincy Van De Cruize (Bishops), and hard-working Guelph defensive tackle Jeffery Finley were among several who didnt advance but likely still helped their stock on Friday. HAMILTON - Brandon Banks and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats made the Montreal Alouettes eat their words Sunday.Banks had a playoff-tying two punt return TDs to lead Hamilton back to the Grey Cup with a 40-24 East Division final win over the Montreal Alouettes. Banks had five punt returns for a playoff-record 226 yards and had another 78-yard TD return negated by a penalty. The victory was especially gratifying for Banks and the Ticats, who remained silent last week after Montreal players Duron Carter, Bear Woods and S.J. Green all boldly predicted their team would win. The assurances came despite the Alouettes losing 29-15 here Nov. 8 that earned Hamilton first in the East and home field for the division final.Banks was a multi-threat, adding three carries for 35 yards and four catches for 33 yards. He finished with 294 total yards and played a major role in making Montreal choke on its words.Of course, we won, Banks said. They guaranteed a win, didnt they so (they) can eat those words. It is what it is.Defensive back Brandon Stewart, who was also centred out by Green last week, relished having the last laugh but said Green was gracious in defeat. He came up to me after the game and said, Good game, go win it in B.C., Stewart said. Theres always respect, I mean hes a great receiver . . . but were going to B.C. and theyre not.Thats all that matters.Banks 88-yard return at 10:55 of the fourth quarter was nothing short of amazing. The five-foot-seven, 153-pound speedster — whose nickname is Speedy B — was completely surrounded by Montreal defenders after corralling Sean Whytes boot but somehow found a seam, then sprinted along the sidelines to put Hamilton ahead 37-24.He did a better job than our cover team, Montreal head coach Tom Higgins said. I think we might have missed 13 tackles on one play, probably a guy had two shots at him.He had an outstanding performance and hats off to him.Woods, who had a game-high 13 tackles, also gave Banks a tip of the cap. I told him walking off the field Man, youre the little killer, he said. Thats because thats two years in a row.On Oct. 26, 2013, Banks returned a missed field goal 107 yards for a TD and added a 45-yard touchdown run as Hamilton beat Montreal 27-24 to clinch second in the East Division. The Ticats then beat the Alouettes 19-15 in the conference semifinal.Hamiltons Kent Austin is off to his third straight Grey Cup game as a CFL head coach. He won the 07 contest in his rookie season on the sidelines with Saskatchewan. He left for the NCAA ranks after that season before returning north to Hamilton last year and said Sundays contest was decided on special teams.I dont know if you ever expect that kind of performance but when you block hard for a talented returner like Brandon is, you always have a chance, Austin said. Special teams was a big part of this game. You always have plays but at the end of the day its just effort, its just a desire to stay on your blocks . . . but (Banks) is an unbelievable player. The win, which improved Hamiltons record at Tim Hortons Field to 7-0, delighting the enthusiastic sellout of 24,334 on a balmy 11 C afternoon. The Ticats will face the Calgary Stampeders in the Grey Cup on Nov. 30 at B.C. Place and chase their first CFL title since 99 — when they beat the Stampeders 32-21 in Vancouver. Calgary downed the Edmonton Eskimos 43-18 in the West final later Sunday. The Ticats lost 45-23 to the Saskatchewan in last years Grey Cup game at Mosaic Stadium.Hamilton controlled the play against the 15 kilometre-an-hour wind and two Nic Grigsby rushing TDs came following interceptions against Montreals Jonathan Crompton, who threw three picks overall to fall to 9-3 as the clubs starter. The Alouettes were looking to return to the Grey Cup for the first time since winning it in 2010.Crompton cut Hamiltons lead to 27-24 with a 63-yard TD strike to Green — his third of the game — at 4:45 of the fourth. Collaros, in his first CFL playoff start, countered by marching Hamilton downfield for Justin Medlocks 42-yard field goal at 9:32.Then Banks cemented the contest with his second punt return TD. Hamiltons defence did its part, forcing four turnovers while Grigsby finished with 93 yards rushing on 18 carries.Crompton recorded his first 300-yard game as a CFL starter, completing 25-of-36 passes for 314 yards. Green had six catches for a game-high 126 yards and three TDs.Montreal ran for just 73 yards rushing on 18 carries against a Hamilton defence that had allowed a league-low 76.8 yards rushing during the season.Hamilton cornerback Delvin Breaux was outstanding against Montreals Duron Carter, holding the leagues third-leading receiver to just three catches for 25 yards. Carter, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter, likely played his final CFL contest as theres reportedly 10 NFL teams interested in the Alouettes star.Collaros was 18-of-27 passing for 199 yards and also added 19 yards rushing on three carries. We were confident but were not going to run our mouths to the media, Collaros said. Thats not what were about.Speedy B and the defence carried us through and we did enough on offence. I dont know what to say about Speedy B, hes just amazing out there.Grigsbys three-yard TD run at 8:50 of the third put Hamilton ahead 27-14. It was set up by Erik Harriss interception, with an unnecessary roughness call on Carter put the Ticats on the Montreal 38.Medlock had four converts and four field goals.Whyte booted three converts and a field goal.NOTES — Offensive lineman Marc Dile and receiver Giovanni Aprile didnt dress for Hamilton. "I personally use it as motivation," Lundqvist said on Monday morning, his team trailing the Kings by a dire 2-0 deficit heading into Game 3 at MSG. "You get upset and frustrated and disappointed when you lose. But you just have to respond the right way." The right response would be victory on home ice and some hope for a crowd that hasnt witnessed a Stanley Cup Final game in 20 years. Heavy underdogs coming into their first Final since 1994, the Rangers have, at the very least, demonstrated their ability to crash, bang and skate with the Kings. A bounce or two in their favour in Games 1 and 2 – not to mention a different ruling on a controversial third Kings goal – and this series could look quite different as the series shifts back East, but as it stands, they find themselves at the very edge of a near-inescapable hole. "We have to start winning and thats tonight," said Lundqvist, who has allowed eight goals on 87 shots in the Final. "I hope its going to be an exciting feeling to step out on the ice here; home crowd, great atmosphere; take advantage of that; enjoy the moment but at the same time, really push ourselves here to try to play our best game so far." New York has done its fair share of good in the Final so far despite the gaping series deficit. Packed with plenty of speed and punch, they raced out to 2-0 leads in both Games 1 and 2 only to come undone at the mercy of the resilient Kings en route to a pair of heartbreaking overtime losses – the latter in double overtime. Theyve donne enough, however, to believe that this series is far from over.dddddddddddd "Chance-wise, were right there with them," said head coach Alain Vigneault, ever optimistic hours before Game 3. "Weve played some good hockey. We got a little bit unfortunate in that last third period, but were right there and we feel real good about our game. "Things always even themselves out with the right effort and the right attitude. You say if you work hard, luck will come with you, well were working hard; were working our butts off here. Im very confident that were going to have that same type of effort here tonight and were going to be real good." History is not on their side. All but five of the 48 teams whove earned a 2-0 series lead in the Final (since 1939) have gone on to capture the Cup. Among those five, interestingly enough, were the Vigneault-led Canucks in 2011, Vancouver falling in seven games to Boston despite the commanding early series lead. The Kings are proof themselves that momentum can change quickly. They rallied furiously from a 3-0 series ditch in the opening round against San Jose, adding two more Game 7 victories along the way. "I think the key is to realize that were close and you dont have to change that much," said Lundqvist. "The difference has been a bounce here or a deflection. Were doing a lot of good things, but it hasnt been enough so we need to raise [our level] a little bit. But its important that you dont try too hard and try too many different things. We need to stick together here and do it together. We had stretches in both games where I think we played really well and created a lot of chances, enough chances to win the game." ' ' '

That is the way this season has gone, and it didnt matter that Brodeur was looking for a win in what might have been his final start after 20 seasons with the Devils. New Jersey just cant win in shootouts. The Devils lost their 13th this season and extended their NHL record for shootout ineptitude to 17 straight over the past two seasons, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Islanders on Friday night. "Almost comical," Devils goal scorer Ryan Carter said of the shootout woes. The Islanders were impressive in the shootout with Frans Nielsen, Josh Bailey and Ryan Strome scoring. Bailey and Strome had highlight goals, doing it with 360 spin-a-rama moves. Devils coach Pete DeBoer said after the game that he wants to play the soon-to-be 42 year-old Brodeur in the season finale against Boston at home on Sunday, but he will talk with the goalie before making a final decision. Brodeur was matter-of-fact about playing. "Every time I play could be my last game," Brodeur said. "Thats the way I kind of approach it. I wasnt sure I was going to play today, either. I was able to play and felt pretty good." Brodeur, the NHL career leader in wins (687) and shutouts (124), is in the last season of his contract. He won three Stanley Cup titles with the Devils. Cory Schneider is in line to be the Devils No. 1 goalie of the future. "It doesnt matter," Brodeur said. "The last game is the last game. Im going to reflect on having an unbelievable career in New Jersey regardless if I decide to stay . or I decide to go do something else. "For me, its not about my last performance. Its about what I accomplished in the whole." Carter and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils. Anders Lee and Strome had regulation goals for the Islanders in a matchup of teams that failed to make the playoffs this season. The Islanders put on a show in the shootout against Brodeur, who made 28 saves through overtime. Nielsen snapped a shot past Brodeur on New Yorks first try, and Damien Brunner tied it 1-1 with a shot high into the net against Anders&nbbsp;Nilsson, who had 25 saves.dddddddddddd "I was kind of guessing (Brodeur) was guessing a little bit," Nielsen said. ") just shot it quick." Bailey and Strome then dazzled the crowd, skating in on Brodeur, doing full turns in front of him and beating him with backhand shots. Jaromir Jagr lost the puck on the Devils second attempt, giving New York the win. The Islanders had tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal by Strome 19 seconds into the third period. Nielsen found Strome coming down the right side for a shot into the top corner that gave him his seventh goal of the season. The rest of the period belonged to the goalies. Brodeur stopped Casey Cizikas on a breakaway, and the four-time Vezina Trophy winner made a snapping glove save on Colin McDonald. Nilsson stopped a breakaway by Jagr, a rebound attempt by Dainius Zubrus, and a late chance on a wrist shot by Jagr. The opening minutes of overtime were just as exciting with Nilsson withstanding four Devils whacking at a loose puck in the crease. When the Islanders eventually cleared it, Brock Nelson got a breakaway, only to be stopped by Brodeur. New York had all four shots in the extra five minutes, thanks in part to a power play. Limited to a shot in the opening 10 minutes of the game, the Islanders grabbed the lead on their second shot. Nielsen poked the puck off the stick of Jagr, and Lee got the puck at centre ice. The rookie skated into the Devils zone and beat Brodeur to the corner at 10:04. New Jersey needed less than a minute to tie it with a goal from the fourth line. Stephen Gionta sent the puck behind the Islanders net. Steve Bernier threw a pass out front, and Carter got inside defenceman Kevin Czuczman for a slam dunk on Nilsson. Elias put New Jersey ahead 2-1 with 9 seconds left in the first period, taking a pass from Travis Zajac and beating Nilsson with a snap shot from between the circles. NOTES: Television analyst Glenn "Chico" Resch announced he is retiring from the Devils broadcast booth after 18 years. The 65-year-old Resch, an original Devils goalie, revealed his decision during the first intermission. ... The Islanders will finish the season at Buffalo on Sunday. ' ' '
