East Lansing, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - After upsetting in-state rival Michigan over a week ago, the Eastern Michigan Eagles will try their luck against the Michigan State Spartans in a non-conference bout at Breslin Student Events Center. Eastern Michigan sports an 8-1 record on the season, with a lone loss coming against Dayton on the road, 73-64, just prior to the teams win over Michigan, 45-42. Michigan State just moved back up into the Top-25 after an 87-61 win over Oakland. The Spartans have won back-to-back contests immediately following a two-game skid, and will look to take the high-flying Eagles down a peg here. The all-time series between Eastern Michigan and Michigan State isnt even close. The two squads have met 32 times, while the Spartans hold a 28-3 lead over the Eagles. In East Lansing, Michigan State has been even more dominant, owning an 18-1 advantage. After Michigan took a 21-19 halftime lead against Eastern Michigan, the Eagles made a second-half comeback to grab a 45-42 lead with time winding down in regulation back on Dec. 9. A 3-point attempt for the Wolverines at the buzzer didnt fall, allowing the Eagles to hold on for their eighth victory of the early season. Jordan Price was the only EMU player to register a double-digit point total in the contest, scoring 11 on 4-of-9 shooting. Karrington Ward brought down seven rebounds to help the cause. Raven Lee enters this game as the Eagles leading scorer, netting 15.0 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the field. Hes the primary scorer on a team averaging 70.3 ppg this season. Ward chips in with 12.9 ppg, and Mike Talley contributes 10.1 ppg with a team-high 38 assists. Eastern Michigan made it a point to add size in the offseason, which clearly helped considering the Eagles grab 41.8 rpg through nine contests. Oakland proved to be no match for Michigan State as the Spartans used a 55.7 percent shooting touch to run to a double-digit first-half lead. Five players scored in double figures for the Spartans, who were paced by Denzel Valentines 19 points. Branden Dawson scored 15 with six assists, Marvin Clark Jr. and Bryn Forbes each added 12, and Matt Costello chipped in with 11 points in the lopsided win. Valentine paces the Spartans this season in scoring, averaging 15.0 ppg. The team as a whole is netting 76.3 ppg on 50.4 percent shooting. Travis Trice contributes 14.3 ppg, Dawson adds 11.6 ppg and Forbes, the transfer from Cleveland State, is scoring at a 10.5 ppg clip in his first year in East Lansing. Dawsons team-leading rebound average checks in at 8.7 rpg, while Trices 57 assists is another team high. Opponents are scoring just 61.0 ppg on the Spartans this season. USA Soccer Shirts . Ribery terrorized the Schalke defence throughout and put the home side ahead in the 36th minute when he chipped the goalkeeper before stroking the ball into the empty net. The French winger struck again after the interval, combining with Thomas Mueller on the left before firing a deflected shot beyond the helpless Timo Hildebrand in the 55th, as Bayern bounced back from Wednesdays 1-0 loss at FC Basel in the Champions League. USA Soccer Store . Auld made 37 saves in a 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday. It was Ottawas first game without starter Anderson, who is out indefinitely after cutting his hand Wednesday night, and it was evident the team wasnt sure how to deal with the change in goal. https://www.cheapusasoccer.com/. Subway workers in Rio de Janeiro, meanwhile, were holding an assembly to vote on whether they would strike to demand higher wages, threatening to disrupt transportation. USA Soccer Gear . -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed Jerome Simpson, the former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver recently convicted on a felony drug charge. Stitched USA Soccer Jerseys . Pressley missed all of last season with Cincinnati because of a knee injury, but the 5-foot-10, 249-pounder had been expected to fill a need on Clevelands roster.CUIABA, Brazil -- Chile capitalized on a sluggish start by Australia to earn a 3-1 win in their World Cup opener on Friday, with Alexis Sanchez carrying over his prolific form for Barcelona with a goal and assist for the dangerous tournament outsiders. Sanchez -- a potential star of the World Cup -- poked home from close range in the 12th minute, before setting up Jorge Valdivia barely a minute later for the playmaker to finish from the edge of the area. A young Australia team, written off by most before a ball had been kicked, looked in danger of falling apart but the experienced Tim Cahill brought them back into the game with a trademark header in the 35th. Cahill, dominant in the air throughout, had several chances to equalize before and after halftime as Chile slipped off the pace in muggy conditions in Cuiaba. But a drilled, low shot by substitute Jean Beausejour settled the match in the second minute of injury time, sending the Chilean bench running onto the pitch and making fans set off fireworks. Chile moved level with Netherlands, which thrashed Spain 5-1 earlier Friday, and has a chance to eliminate the reigning champions when they meet in their next Group B game on Wednesday. "They have a superlative history in (major tournaments) so we definitely will have to play better than we did today," Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. "It will certainly be an electrifying game." Boasting its best ever squad for a World Cup, Chile has been strongly tipped by many -- including Pele -- to go far in Brazil despite being thrown in the same group as two of Europes top teams. And the Spanish, ripped apart by the Dutch in Salvador, will not be relishing playing Sampaolis side with their title defence on the line. Especially with Sanchez in this formm.dddddddddddd The 25-year-old forward is coming off his best season at Camp Nou -- having scored 21 goals, 19 in the league -- and he was too much for a flimsy Australia defence in the first half. Sanchez was on hand to guide in a close-range finish inside the near post after Australia captain Mile Jedinak failed to head clear Charles Aranguizs cross. The celebrations had hardly died down when Sanchez span his marker and laid the ball across for Valdivia to finish high into the net from 20 yards (meters). "Early on, we were probably just overawed by the whole thing," Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said. "In the end, we gave away a two-goal start and thats what killed us." It was already looking like a damage-limitation exercise for the beleaguered Socceroos, the lowest-ranked nation in Brazil. The raucous Chilean fans were regaling their teams crisp passing with chants "Ole" and a no-look backheel from Sanchez highlighted his confidence. But Chiles momentum was punctured when Cahill, renowned for his tremendous jumping ability, leapt above diminutive marker Gary Medel to thump home a header from a right-wing cross. He had a header ruled out for a marginal offside and squandered other chances before Beausejour ended Australias hopes of a comeback. "They got in twice," Cahill said. "(But) after that you could see their legs were going. We knew we could get something out of this game. We stood up strong. Its just unfortunate, not a lot went our way tonight, and it showed." Capping a satisfying night overall for Chile was the sight of star midfielder Arturo Vidal starting and playing 59 minutes on his return from knee surgery. "He was very good," Sampaoli. "His knee is good." ' ' '
