Ted Ligety was looking to add more hardware to his collection this season. Just not this kind of hardware. The two-time Olympic gold medallist had four metal screws inserted into his left wrist as a result of a skiing mishap in a training session on Nov 22.Now, hes showing his mettle by racing in the World Cup downhill, super-G and giant slalom races this weekend in Beaver Creek, Colorado. Thats the current plan, anyway, despite a wrist thats still so tender he can barely push out of the start gate.Thats my job, to be out there skiing, no matter what, said the 30-year-old from Park City, Utah, who finished 3.73 seconds behind the top time of Norways Kjetil Jansrud in a downhill training session Tuesday. I wouldnt miss this for the world. If I can do this relatively safe, then Im going to be out there to push it.Ligety has had his fair share of broken wrists throughout his career. But this one topped the list as far as pain. He was practicing in Vail, Colorado, when he essentially hooked his hand on a gate, breaking bones in his wrist and tearing ligaments. It was straight to surgery.Just easier and faster to pin it all together, recovery-wise, he said.Following the procedure, Ligety took two days off and then returned to the hill. He trained without a ski pole — he couldnt hold one with his left hand — and said that has actually improved his balance.Ligety skipped the races in Lake Louise, Alberta, last weekend, to give the wrist more time to mend and to squeeze in some extra sessions in the giant slalom, the event he won at the Sochi Olympics.Every day my wrist feels better and better, said Ligety, who also captured gold in the combined at the 2006 Turin Olympics. The plan is to leave the screws in for the season and then remove them.Ligetys not the only big name on the mens team banged up. Six-time Olympic medallist Bode Miller had back surgery last month and will be sidelined until at least January.Thats just the nature of skiing. Its hard to stay fully healthy, Ligety said. It will be good to have Bode back healthy and pushing it, since his back has been bothering him for a while.Ligety said his injury couldve been much worse. But he was wearing a pair of gloves he helped design, along with U.S. Ski Team physician Dr. Randy Viola. They fortified racing gloves in vulnerable spots, using a material designed to harden upon impact.Saved me from getting completely smashed up, said Ligety. As for possibly doing even more damage to the wrist by competing, Ligety said thats not a concern.Once you get four screws put in there, its pretty locked down, Ligety said. Were not concerned about any further damage, other than smashing it on a gate, which would hurt it anyway. Once you have screws in there, its just waiting until the swelling comes down and the strength to come back. Ive kind of had the pain go away a little bit.Beaver Creek is one venue that Ligety doesnt want to skip, especially since hes always been so good on this hill. Hes won four giant slalom races on the challenging Birds of Prey course. Not only that, but its an opportunity to forget about the season-opening GS race in Soelden, Austria, in October. He was the favourite, but struggled on the bumpy course and finished 10th. His biggest rival, Marcel Hirscher of Austria, won the event.I think Soelden was going OK — I wasnt going to win — but couldve easily gotten second if I didnt hit a huge rock and lose all my speed and my edge going onto the flats, Ligety said. For years, Ligetys been on a different level than everyone else in the discipline, with some of his competitors even referring to him as Mr. GS. Hes won five World Cup GS titles and, of course, that Olympic gold in Sochi. This season, hes changed his training just to try to stay ahead of his competition. Hes working with a nutritionist and has cut way back on sugar, including ice cream — his weakness.Im just continually building on ways that I feel are the best for getting me faster, Ligety said. Im 30 years old now. Im not super young and a little kid anymore. The Brazilian-born strikers brace drew him level with Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo as the leagues leading scorers with 17 goals apiece through 16 rounds. Barry Sanders Jersey . Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema scored two goals each Wednesday night in a 6-1 rout of Schalke in the first leg of their second-round matchup. "We played a very, very good match," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We got well into the match, scored two early goals and that opened the game and left us able to counter and to use the speed of our players.DETROIT - The first priority was to get the ball back, and Detroit was in good position to do that on third-and-long.Then safety Glover Quin turned a crucial defensive stand into something even better.Quins interception late in the fourth quarter gave the Lions great field position, and Matthew Stafford found Corey Fuller for the winning touchdown moments later, capping a dramatic comeback in Detroits 24-23 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Lions trailed 23-10 before Stafford threw two scoring passes in the final 3:38 — with Quins interception coming between them. Our defence did a great job of getting us the ball back, Stafford said. We fight, we never gave up, obviously had to have some things go our way, made some plays and won the game. The Saints (2-4) were in control late in the fourth quarter when Stafford found Golden Tate for a 73-yard catch-and-run that made it 23-17. Then Drew Brees was intercepted on third down by Quin, whose 23-yard return gave the Lions (5-2) the ball at the New Orleans 14.Detroit caught another break when Rafael Bush was called for pass interference on fourth down. Stafford eventually connected with Fuller in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown and the win.The Saints committed 12 penalties for 134 yards.I thought the penalties ended up hurting us, New Orleans coach Sean Payton said. I wasnt happy with how that game was officiated. Ill leave it at that, and yet that wasnt the reason in the end.Detroit won for the second straight week without star receiver Calvin Johnson, who is nursing an ankle problem. The Lions sputtered for most of the game before Tate caught Staffords pass around his own 35, turned up the field and outran two New Orleans defenders who looked as if they had good angles to make the tackle.Tate caught 10 passes for 154 yards, both career highs. That play he made on that long touchdown is as good of a play as Ive seen in a long time, said Stafford, who has seen his share of impressive receiving plays in Detroit. Gave him a chance on a ball. He came back and caught it, he did the rest. Then it was up to Detroits defence — which came into the game ranked No. 1 in the NFL — to give the offence another chance. The Lions had timeouts remaining, and the Saints let Brees try to throw for a first down. His pass over the middle was intercepted, giving Detroit a short field. We knew on third down that Drew likes to go to the sticks, and he likes to throw in the middle of the field, Quin said. The D-line was closing in on him, and he tried to look me off a little bit, but he was trying to hit the tight end or somebody coming rright across the field.ddddddddddddAll the film study, all the preparation added up, and we were able to make a big play.On fourth-and-5 from the 9, Stafford threw toward running back Reggie Bush, who had not been much of a factor against his former team. Bush appeared to be short of the first-down marker, and the ball fell incomplete — but Rafael Bush arrived a bit early, and the penalty gave the Lions a new set of downs.Fuller made a nice jumping catch in the back of the end zone and got both feet down for the final touchdown.Cornerback Darius Slay broke up a fourth-down pass by Brees with 21 seconds remaining to seal the win. During one stretch in the fourth quarter, Brees went 10 straight passes without a completion, the longest dry spell of his career, according to STATS.The worst feeling in professional sports is when you feel like you let your team down, Brees said. Thats the way I feel right now with that interception.Brees did throw for 342 yards and two touchdowns, including a 46-yarder to Kenny Stills in the third quarter that put New Orleans ahead 17-3. Stafford threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns, although he threw a pair of interceptions that nearly cost Detroit dearly.Stafford forced a pass into coverage late in the first quarter, and Keenan Lewis picked it off, giving the Saints the ball at the Detroit 29. Brees found Austin Johnson for a 13-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.Matt Prater kicked a 21-yard field goal for the Lions, banking it through off the left upright. Not to be outdone, Shayne Graham banked a 27-yard field goal through off the left upright on the final play of the half, giving New Orleans a 10-3 lead.Stills slipped behind the defence on the first drive of the second half and gathered in Brees deep pass to give New Orleans a two-touchdown lead. The Lions answered with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with Joique Bells 1-yard scoring run.Grahams 48-yard field goal made it 20-10 with 13:33 remaining. Detroit then drove into the red zone, but tight end Jordan Thompson dropped a pass, and the ball bounced right to Kenny Vaccaro for an interception.NOTES: New Orleans TE Jimmy Graham, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury, played but did not catch a pass. He was targeted only twice. ... Saints C Jonathan Goodwin left in the second quarter with a left leg injury. New Orleans also lost NT Brodrick Bunkley in the second half to a concussion, and fellow DL Glenn Foster left with a knee injury. ...
