INDIANAPOLIS -- For a half, Rudy Gay dominated Paul George. The way George had started the season, Gay knew better than to think it would last. George scored 17 of his 23 points in the third quarter and the Indiana Pacers beat the Toronto Raptors 91-84 Friday night to improve to 6-0 and match the best start in franchise history. George, who entered the day fourth in the league in scoring at 25.8 points per game, is a big reason. "Hes Paul," Gay said. "Paul George is a great defender. Hes not just going to sit down and let people score on him. Everybody on our team expected him to warm up." Gay scored a season-high 30 points on 12-of-26 shooting for the Raptors, but was held to 3-of-13 shooting after halftime. George bounced back from a five-point, 2-of-10 first half to completely change the tenor of the small forward matchup on both ends of the floor. Gays 22 points had carried Toronto to a 46-44 lead at intermission. "Thank God he just stopped making those contested shots," George said. "It was frustrating because he was hitting some tough ones, but in this league, jump shots dont always last. So I was just trying to pressure up and contest all his shots." Toronto lost its third straight to fall to 2-4. Amir Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Raptors shot 39.5 per cent from the field, becoming the sixth consecutive opponent Indiana has held to 40 per cent shooting or worse. Roy Hibbert added a season-high 20 points and seven rebounds as the Pacers remained the NBAs lone undefeated team. "Everybody has to sacrifice something," Hibbert said. "Its somebody different every night. I dont expect to have 20-point nights all the time." The Pacers improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1970-71, when the club played in the ABA. They rallied from a halftime deficit for the fifth time this season and overcame 16 turnovers to shoot 46.2 per cent. George made an arcing 3 over a leaping Landry Fields at the third-quarter buzzer and clinched his fists in celebration before sprinting to Indianas bench and slapping hands with teammates. George outscored the Raptors 17-13 in the period while shooting 5 of 9 from the field and making all five free throws. The Pacers led 72-59 entering the fourth quarter. While George had Hibberts scoring and 14 points from George Hill, Gay never received much support. His usual wingman, DeMar DeRozan, entered averaging 19.2 points per game but scored just six and missed 13 of 15 shots. "Its tough on the whole team when DeMar struggles," Gay said. "I have to figure out how we can make us both comfortable at the same time." George added eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. His sensational start to his fourth season had fans at Bankers Life Fieldhouse peppering him with the occasional "M-V-P" chant. Toronto used a 19-7 run over the final 5:17 of the first quarter to lead 32-22. The Raptors had success running with nine fast-break points in the period but produced just two more the rest of the game. "They stopped sending guys to the (offensive) boards," said Raptors guard Kyle Lowry, who had 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. "They just let Roy and David (West) go to the boards so other guys could get back." The Pacers limited transition opportunities and kept Toronto off the 3-point line in the second quarter to get back in the game. Orlando Johnson had five points and an assist in a 12-0 Pacers run early in the second quarter that tied it at 34. Hibberts fallaway 18-footer at the halftime buzzer completed a 5-2 spurt. Indiana started the second half on a 10-0 run and led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter before finishing off its fourth home victory. NOTES: Hill returned after missing three games with a sore left hip. C.J. Watson scored 33 points in three games starting in Hills place. ... Pacers forward Danny Granger, who has yet to play this season because of a strained left calf, may return to practice next week. ... The Raptors won both visits to Bankers Life Fieldhouse last season. ... Tyler Hansbrough, drafted by Indiana with the No. 13 pick in 2009, returned for the first time since signing with Toronto as a free agent in July. He entered to a mixed reaction in the first quarter and finished with four points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. . Pacers guard Lance Stephenson limped off the floor in the first minute of the second quarter with a sore left knee but returned to start the second half. Cheap Supersonics Jerseys . ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Theres no longer any bad blood between Bill Belichick and Wes Welker heading into the showdown Sunday between the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.Belichick said he has long gotten over Welkers hit that sidelined then-Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib in the AFC championship. At the time, New Englands often cantankerous coach called it one of the worst plays hed seen in nearly four decades of coaching and asked the NFL to look into it.The league ruled the hit was legal.Way past that, Belichick said in a conference call with Denver media Wednesday. I have a lot of respect for Wes and what he did for us and what hes done for the Broncos and what hes done throughout his career.Welker took out Talib, now his teammate in Denver, on a pick play at the line of scrimmage in the second quarter of Denvers 26-16 victory in January. Talib went to the locker room with a bruised knee and didnt return. With the Patriots best cover player out, Peyton Manning finished with 400 yards passing and two TDs — nearly 300 of those yards coming with Talib sidelined. When Talib signed a free agent deal with Denver this spring, he called Welker, a good friend of mine, and said, I watched that play 1,000 times and I can promise you he didnt do it on purpose.Welker, who played six seasons in New England before coming to Denver in 2013, got over the brouhaha even faster than his old boss.I moved on to getting ready for the Super Bowl, Welker said Wednesday. So, its the same for me. Its in the past and Im just really kind of looking forward to this game.Hes hoping its better than his homecoming last year, when his muffed punt in overtime led to New Englands 34-31 win in overtime.Welker said hes probably a little more comfortable with it this time around as the Broncos (6-1) prepare to face the Patriots (6-2). Im just so excited about the opportunity and a big game like this. The forecast for wintery weather has helped him stay focused this week. No, I havent had to get any tickets. So I think a lot of that is people like visiting Denver where its warmer weather, and they saw the forecast in Foxborough and said, Well, I dont think Ill be heading there, Welker said.Welker just doesnt want to have to return to New England in January.Obviously its still early but at the same time, theyre all big games, especially when it comes down to home-field advantage, he said. Theyre really big and you have to make sure that youre treating these games as playoff-type games.Manning vs. Brady XVI features two quarterbacks coming off monster months in which they each threw for 14 touchdowns.Mannings 127.4 passer rating in October was second only to Tom Bradys 129.1 — which came on the heels of the Patriots 41-14 wipeout at Kansas City that had many fans saying the Patriots dynastic days were history.Since then, the Patriots have won four straight.Im not surprised at all at Bradys bounce-back, Welker said. Ive seen it 100 times there where its one bad week and everythings falling apart. So, its one week and you can never really judge anything off that and you knew they were going to bounce back from it.Welker has a unique perspective of having been on both sides of Manning vs. Brady.Theyre both the best in the game right now and Im obviously very fortunate to get to play with both, Welker said.Welker isnt having the same kind of season he enjoyed last year. After five 100-catch seasons in New England, Welker was leading the Broncos with 73 catches for 778 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns in 2013 before missing most of the final month with a concussion. He returned for the playoffs and caught 18 passes for 160 yards and a TD.This year, he has 19 catches for 181 yards and one touchdown. He caught just two passes for 5 yards in Denvers last game, a 35-21 win over San Diego. But Manning called his second one the catch of the game, because it came on third-and-4 from Denvers 10 with 3:29 left.Would I want the ball more? Yes. (But) as long as were winning games and were being productive on offence and doing those things, Im good with however we get that done, Welker said. Its kind of strange being, I feel like, the weak link of our offence. If Im the weak link, were going to be OK. Im excited about the guys we have and the camaraderie that we have together and really pulling for each other.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapletonYeezy 700 Online . MINNEAPOLIS -- Kyle Gibson matched a career high with eight strikeouts, Chris Parmelee hit a two-run single after entering the game for an injured Joe Mauer, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 on Tuesday night. Trevor Plouffe added four singles and Aaron Hicks two hits and an RBI for the Twins. After getting hit in the right elbow by Andrew Chafin (0-1) in the first inning, Mauer played defence in the second before coming out with a bruised elbow. The Twins say he is day to day. Parmelee hit in Mauers spot and singled down the left-field line to drive in Hicks and Eduardo Escobar, giving Minnesota a 3-0 lead in the second. That was plenty of support for Gibson (13-11), who allowed one run in seven innings and won for just the second time in his last eight starts. Chafin gave up four runs on seven hits and was removed after the first two batters he faced in the fourth reached base. Ender Inciarte lined his fourth single of the game to score Cody Ross and make it 6-3 in the ninth before Jared Burton got A.J. Pollack to ground out with runners on first and second to end it. Montreal was well rested for Fridays opener in Buffalo, having had four days of rest after losing 5-0 to the New York Rangers on Sunday. However, the Sabres were able to halt a six-game slide against the Canadiens by posting a 2-1 regulation victory at First Niagara Centre. Matt Moulson played the hero for Buffalo, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:18 left in the third period. It was the fourth goal of the season for Moulson and his first game-winning tally. Montreal tied the game at 1-1 early in the third, but Buffalo was able to go on top thanks to a fortunate bounce while on a power play. Tyler Ennis had dumped the puck into the Montreal end off the glass and Habs goaltender Carey Price went behind the net to play it. However, it hit off a stanchion and bounced out front where Moulson had an open net for the game-winner. He had a number of chances to score throughout the game, Sabres coach TTed Nolan said.dddddddddddd For him to get two or three chances and to get one like that was probably fitting. Ennis had the other goal for the Sabres and Jhonas Enroth made 30 saves for the win. It was the fourth victory in the last five games for Buffalo, which is suddenly surging after beginning 2014-15 with a dreadful 3-13-2 record. P.A. Parenteau had the only goal for the Canadiens, who fell for the third time in five games. Price allowed both goals on 25 shots. I think there are some good things to build off of, Montreals Max Pacioretty said. We have to do a better job of finding ways to score goals. The Canadiens, who lead the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference with 33 points, have managed only a total of three goals over the last three games. Montreals only three-game slide this season came during an 0-2-1 stretch from Oct. 30-Nov. 4. Fridays setback was the Habs first loss against Buffalo since a 2-1 defeat in Montreal on March 23, 2013. The Habs have claimed two straight encounters at the Bell Centre and are 3-1-1 in their last five home tilts versus Buffalo. ' ' '

TORONTO - Anthony Duclair was happy to ditch his blue New York Rangers jersey for a red Team Canada one, at least for a few weeks.Duclair was released by the NHL club to take part in the camp leading up to the world junior hockey championship in Montreal and Toronto. So far, hes the only one.As Canada gears up to try to win its first world junior gold since 2009, theyll have to do so without a handful of eligible players who are making an impact in the pros like Floridas Aaron Ekblad and Tampa Bays Jonathan Drouin. The status of two others, Ottawas Curtis Lazar and Vancouvers Bo Horvat, is still uncertain.Letting Duclair go seemed to be a no-brainer for New York, given that he was a part-time player after making the team out of training camp.Im glad that the Rangers let me be a part of this tournament, Duclair said Saturday morning. Its the last opportunity for me to play in this tournament. When youre playing against the best junior-age players in the world, you know youre going to get some good hockey and some good minutes. Its a big tournament and its really tough to play in. Im really looking forward to it.But its far from a one-size-fits-all strategy when NHL teams weigh whether to send their young stars to the world juniors. In the case of Ekblad and Colorados reigning Calder Trophy winner, Nathan MacKinnon, saying no is quite easy. Then there are the iffy cases like Drouin, Lazar and Horvat, each of whom has played a bottom-six role as a rookie in the NHL. All have been healthy scratches fewer times than Duclair was with the Rangers.Every situations different, Duclair said. I think every player you need to handle differently. Some guys in the NHL have a lot of impact in their club teams. You dont want to let them go. For myself, I was in and out of the lineup as a young guy, so I think it was a pretty good decision for me to come here.Drouin was Canadas second-leading scorer at last years tournament with three goals and six assists in seven games. Looking at his whole season with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leagues Halifax Mooseheads, Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman liked what he saw out of Drouin becoming a more complete player. After breaking his right thumb, Drouin made his Tampa Bay debut in October and has a goal and 10 assists and has averaged just under 13 minutes of ice time. Coach Jon Cooper made him a healthy scratch four times.Still, Yzerman wants Drouin to keep growing in the NHL, not at the junior level. Its just going to take a little time adjusting, Yzerman told local media this week. Were asking him to do more than just score: Be good in all aspects of the game. And hes committed to it and we want him to get as much opportunity here.Lazar had three goals and four assists for Canada last year, and theres only a small chance hell get to have an encore. Part of that has to do with a knee injury to Chris Neil that opens up a spot for the 19-year-old with the Senators.A healthy scratch twice early, Lazar has a goal and six assists and has had similar ice time to Drouin. The Senators declined comment on Lazar until a final decision is made on whether to loan him to Canada for the world juniors.Horvat might be the most interesting case of all, considering he has carved out a niche for himself with the Canucks.Horvat, who was selected with the draft pick Vancouver acquired in the Cory Schneider trade with New Jersey, has only been scratched once since he broke into the NHL. He has a goal and four assists and is averaging about 10 minutes of ice time per game. When the Canucks came to Toronto on Dec. 6, Hockey Canada president and CEO Tom Renney took a light-hearted jab at trying to get Horvat loaned for the world juniors. In an interview shown on the video screens at Air Canada Centre, Renney said Team Canada was pretty complete, except for maybe a player on the ice tonight. That line aside, theres undoubtedly some pressure on the Canucks to decide before Canada finalizes its roster. Thats not due until Christmas Day, but the decision on Horvat must be made before the NHL roster freeze goes into effect Dec. 19.Duclair will get that experience after being passed over last year. The Montreal native had just a goal and six assists with the Rangers but in 2013-14 recorded 99 points for the Quebec Remparts.Canadian coach Benoit Groulx, whose full-time job is behind the bench for the QMJHLs Gatineau Olympiques, hopes Duclair can be a force. Last year after Christmas he was tough to play against, Groulx said. He ended up scoring 50 goals, and when you have a 50-goal scorer, whether its in the Quebec League, Ontario League or Western League, youve got to respect that.Duclair is a nice fit as a natural right-winger, according to Hockey Canada director of player personnel Ryan Jankowski.Scratched for Saturday nights exhibition game against the Toronto CIS Selects team, Duclair is a virtual lock to make the roster and just hopes he can make the most of this chance.I think I bring some experience, some leadership in the locker-room, Duclair said. Whatever I learned at the pro level I can bring down to the team here.———Follow @SWhyno on Twitter. Charvarius Ward Super Bowl Jersey . She was a pioneer. Happ offered more questions than answers Wednesday in another rocky outing for the Toronto Blue Jays. The six-foot-five left-hander, pencilled in as one of Torontos starters, lasted just 2 2/3 innings in an 11-6 Grapefruit League win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Happ threw 71 pitches, including 34 strikes in an appearance short on control on a day when pitching coach Pete Walker said the goal was "to get him in the strike zone." "Its a big start for him," Walker added. It did not go according to plan, however, on a sunny 21-degree day before 5,255 at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. "Fortunately its not the end of the world here," Happ said. "But theyre going to count soon." On the plus side, Jays slugger Jose Bautista hit a pair of two-run homers -- his fourth and fifth home runs of the spring. And Melky Cabrera, who now has 19 hits in 45 spring at-bats, drove in two runs with two hits. And one day after being thumped 18-4 by the Detroit Tigers, the Jays (8-10) rallied from a 3-0 deficit for the win over the Phillies (5-13). With R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Brandon Morrow accounting for three-fifths of the starting rotation, the Jays have spent the spring looking for two more to join them. While Drew Hutchison has been by far the best of the rest, the Jays have so far resisted appointing him part of the rotation. Instead they have ostensibly given one of the remaining starting jobs to Happ, who has yet to provide much reason for earning it, and said the search continues to fill the final hole. Happ carried an ERA of 40.50 into Wednesdays game, having given up six runs on six hits with five walks in 1 1/3 innings over two previous spring appearances. A back problem has delayed his progress in spring training. He looked for positives in Wednesdays outing, saying the back felt fine and there were some possible minor technical fixes available. "I dont feel like Im far (from where I should be)," he told reporters. "You guys are going to take that outing for what it was and it doesnt look pretty. But pitch-wise, Im up to 70. Next time, it will be 85-90. If I still feel strong, that will be a good thing. So Im close." There seemed to be some mixed messages on Happs role before manager John Gibbons declared him part of the probable rotation. Happ dodged a question on whether he felt he had to prove something to make the rotation or whether his pedigree had already earned it. "Thats really not up for me to really answer that because that changes to whoever the bosses are," he said. "So it doesnt really matter what I think for that. "I expect to go out and be better, I know that. And hopefully thesee next two (outings) will be.dddddddddddd" The Jays starting pitching plans are certainly not set in stone. "We have an idea of what were going to do, but things could change," Walker said prior to Wednesdays game. Happ went 5-7 with a 4.56 ERA in 18 starts for Toronto last year in a season derailed by injury. He suffered a skull fracture and sprained right knee when he fell to the ground after getting hit with a liner by Desmond Jennings on May 7. He returned to action Aug. 7. Happ did not help his cause Wednesday when he gave up three runs on three hits, walking four and striking out two. He lived dangerously early, putting the leadoff batters on base the first two innings and often going behind in the count. He paid for it in the second, loading the bases on a single and two walks. With two outs, he was 0-2 on Ben Revere but the Phillies leadoff hitter worked the count to 3-2 and then emptied the bases with a double to the left-field fence. Happ got the first two outs in the third but then yielded a walk and a single before giving way to Sergio Santos. Toronto went ahead 4-3 in the third on an RBI double by Jose Reyes, sacrifice fly by Cabrera and two-run homer by Bautista. The Jays sent 10 men to the plate, leaving the bases loaded. The Phillies pulled even with two outs in the fourth when No. 9 hitter Cody Asche hit a solo shot to centre off Santos. Cabrera added an RBI single and Adam Lind a two-run double in the fourth for a 7-4 lead. Bautistas second homer made it 9-4 in the sixth. A Ryan Goins triple increased the lead to 10-4 in the seventh. Philadelphia pulled two back in the seventh against reliever Aaron Loup. The Jays added a run in the eighth on a Dan Johnson RBI single. Phillies starter Roberto Hernandez had his own troubles on the day, before exiting with one out in the fourth. He gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits with one walk and two strikeouts. The 33-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, who was 6-13 with a 4.89 ERA last season for Tampa Bay, cruised through the first two innings and then crumbled in the third and fourth. Previously known as Fausto Carmona, Hernandez came to the Phillies in December on a US$4.5 million, one-year contract. He made headlines in January 2012 when he was arrested on charges of falsifying his identity that were later dropped. Major League Baseball suspended him for three weeks. NOTES -- Earlier Wednesday, the Jays assigned left-hander Ricky Romero and right-hander Marcus Stroman to their minor-league complex. Both were shelled in an 18-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday ... Toronto entered Wednesdays games with 74 walks in spring training, worst among American League teams. ' ' '

Shaking off a 23-foot miss at the second-half buzzer, Napier scored nine of his 24 points in overtime to lead seventh-seeded UConn (27-8) to an 89-81 win over 10th-seeded Saint Josephs (24-10) in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday night. DeAndre Daniels scored 18 while freshman centre Amida Brimah forced overtime by completing a three-point play in the final minute. It was a big victory for Ollie, who took over two years ago after Calhoun was forced to step down because of health issues. After the Huskies won three national titles in 26 seasons under Calhoun, Ollie became the first UConn coach to lead the program to a tournament berth since Dom Perno in 1979. And it came a year after Connecticut was barred from post-season play because of academic sanctions. Langston Galloway scored 25 points for Saint Josephs (24-10). The Hawks wore down because of a lack of depth, and then lost their top forward Halil Kanacevic, who fouled out early into overtime. The Huskies advance to play Saturday, when theyll face the winner of an East Region game between No. 2 seed Villanova and No. 15 Milwaukee. With the game tied at 70 entering overtime, Daniels opened the scoring by completed a three-point play with 3:47 left during a 5-minute period the Huskies never trailed. Napier then scored seven straight points -- five of them coming from the line -- to put the Huskies up 82-74 with 55 seconds remaining. The game turned in the final minute of regulation and after Hawks guard Chris Wilson hit two free throws to put Saint Joes up 70-67 with 49.dddddddddddd.2 seconds left. Napier missed on a drive at the other end, but Brimah got the rebound to the left of the basket, and was fouled while putting it back. He tied the game by hitting the free throw. Taking over with 39 seconds left, the Hawks never got a shot off on what became their final possession of regulation. Galloway twice lost the ball on the dribble, but got it back both times, before launching a desperation shot that hit off the side of the backboard as the shot clock expired. With 2.7 seconds left, the Huskies made two nifty passes to get the ball to Napier on the fly, who pulled up just before the 3-point line and had his shot hit off the rim. Losing Kanacevic was a costly blow for the Hawks, who have little depth beyond their starting five. Kanacevic finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman DeAndre Bembry scored 16 points for a Hawks team that won the Atlantic 10 tournament title last weekend. After hitting 13 of their first 20 baskets, the Hawks offence cooled. Saint Joes went 10 of 22 in the second half, and finished the game going 27 of 54. The Huskies were coming off a 71-61 loss to Louisville in the American Athletic Conference title game on Saturday. Theyve now won 10 of their past three, with two of those losses coming against Louisville. The opening nine minutes of the game featured eight lead changes before the Hawks eventually broke the game open by building a 37-27 lead with 3:09 left, when DeAndre Bembry hit two free throws. The Hawks hit 13 of their first 20 attempts and were up 40-32 before UConns Ryan Boatright hit a 3-point basket with 8 seconds left. ' ' '

BRISBANE, Australia -- This was one time Serena Williams didnt mind being pushed into the deep end, to use her own description. The top-ranked Williams carried her winning momentum from 2013 into the new season, beating No. 2-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday to defend her title at the Brisbane International and set the tone for the Australian Open. She extended her winning streak to 22 matches with the emphatic win over the reigning Australian Open champion, making it back-to-back victories over two of her main rivals. She beat four-time major winner Maria Sharapova in straight sets in an intense semifinal, her 14th consecutive win in that frosty duel. She improved to 14-3 against Azarenka, the last person to beat her last year. Before the semifinals, Williams said there was nothing like being "thrown into the deep end straight away." Having come through those challenges, she thought it was the ideal season-opening tournament. "It was a great test. It showed me where my level was," Williams said, looking ahead to the Australian Open. "Im happy I was able to play both Maria and Victoria, because they brought their A games against me. I know now what I need to do for Melbourne -- I look forward to it." The years first major starts Jan. 13 at Melbourne Park and Williams, who won 78 of her 82 matches and collected 11 titles last year, is positioning herself as the favourite to claim a sixth Australian title after winning a tournament featuring six of the top 10 women. Williams has so many trophies now, she said she doesnt know where they all are -- "some are MIA" -- but that doesnt stop her from collecting more. This was her 58th, including 17 majors. Immediately after the loss, Azarenka said she hopes to face Williams again in Melbourne -- as the top two ranked players, they can only meet in the final. "I cant say Im satisfied today, but I want to take the positive, what Ive done today, and build from here towards the next week," Azarenka said. "This is the first week where you really test yourself where your game is at, and from here you can take the positives and the things that you have to work on and really go after that." Williams earned the first break in the seventh game and hit fired consecutive aces to finish off the first set in 37 minutes. She went up a break immediately in the second set before Azarenka won four straight games to take a 4-2 lead. Williams, who was comparatively silent against a screeching opponent for the second straight night, let out a scream of relief and satisfaction after hitting an overhead winner to break back in the seventh game. And she yelled and pumped her arm again after converting a break in the 11th game with a backhand down line. Serving for the championship, Williams started with two aces -- her 10th and 11th -- and then hit a service winner to set up two championship points at 40-15. She fired an unreturnable serve to finish it off. The Williams sisters were hoping to both win a WTA Tour event in the same week for the first time in 15 years, but Ana Ivanovic prevented that when she beat Venus Williams 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the final of the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. It was the end of a personal drought for second-seeded Ivanovic, who claimed her 12th career singles title and her first since Bali in 2011. Venus Williams was the crowds sentimental favourite after reaching the final of her first tournament since September. After a long struggle with injury and illness, her form in Auckland supported her claim that she is fitter and healthier than she has been in years. The mens final in Brisbane on Sunday will feature two 32-year-old former No. 1s. Top-seeded Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt earned three-set semifinal victories to advance, renewing a rivalry that stretches back to the last millennium. Federer beat No. 8-seeded Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 immediately after Hewitts 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win over second-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in sweltering heat topping 40 Celsius (104 F). MINNEAPOLIS -- With their rotation depleted and the new slugger sidelined by a rash of injuries, the Texas Rangers have been forced to find alternate methods for winning. Its working quite well in late May. Leonys Martin doubled twice and scored three times, including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Rangers beat Minnesota Twins 5-4 on Thursday to win their second straight four-game series on the road. "Those guys have had to grind, and everybody has had to have been used," said manager Ron Washington, who has seen starting pitchers Matt Harrison, Derek Holland and Martin Perez and first baseman Prince Fielder hit the disabled list as well as key hitters Jurickson Profar, Geovany Soto and others. "So thats the way you play team baseball, and thats exactly what were doing." Shin-Soo Choo hit a three-run double in the second for the Rangers, but the Twins took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning on Josh Willinghams first home run of the season, a no-doubt drive to the second deck above left-centre field. Then the role players took over for the Rangers. Alexi Ogando (2-2) got four outs for the victory, and Joakim Soria retired the last two batters for his 10th save. Soria saved the last two games of the series after he had his first blown chance of the season in Tuesdays 4-3 loss. Martin hit a leadoff double in the eighth against Casey Fien (3-2), moved up on a sacrifice bunt and sprinted home on a sacrifice fly by Rougned Odour, beating a sweep tag by catcher Josmil Pinto. The throw by centre fielder Danny Santana, a rookie shortstop playing out of position, was off the plate and up the line. "He has to make a perfect throw to throw me out in that situation," Martin said. The Rangers tied it at 4 when Martin doubled and scored on Robinson Chirinos single in the sixth. Samuel Deduno gave up nine hits while striking out two and was removed with one out in that inning. With eight wins in their last 11 games, including three of four at Detroit last week, the Rangers have begun to find their stride. That was evident in the second inning, when bases-loaded, nobody-out situations for both teams went opposite ways. Deduno moved within one strike of escaping without any damage after an infield popup and a strikeout. But Choo, who served as the designated hitter to give his sore left ankle a break from left field with the short turnaround from the night before, drove a 2-2 curveball down the left-field line. "I have to be better," Deduno said. Alex Rios, who stretched his hitting streak to 12 games, started that rally with a sharp single. Martin scored easily from first base to put the Rangers ahead 3-0. "I was thinking home plate all the way," Martin said. Nick Martinez dodged trouble in the bottom of the frame when Pinto sent a soft roller back to the mound. After a short throw home for a forceout, Martinez got Eduardo Escobar to line hard into a double play. The rookie was charged with more than three earned runs for the first time in five starts. He allowed nine hits and walked two in 5 2-3 innings. "It was a learning experience for him today, to go out there and keep his team in the ballgame when he didnt have his best stuff. That was awesome right there," Washington said. Trevor Plouffe and Willingham hit RBI singles in the third, but the Twins have only 14 runs in their last seven games, going 6 for 52 with runners in scoring position. "Thats the main focus, getting guys on, but we cant get them in," second baseman Brian Dozier said. NOTES: Washington held SS Elvis Andrus out of the lineup to rest for the first time this season. ... Deduno walked Martin, ending a streak by Twins pitchers of 131 straight batters without an unintentional walk. ... Madrid plays city rival Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, when a victory in Lisbon would provide the Spanish giant with its record 10th European Cup -- or "La Decima" as it is known in Spanish. Its been a long wait since Zinedine Zidane scored one of footballs iconic goals to lead Madrid to its ninth title, such that even Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti noted upon his arrival in the Spanish capital: "You could taste the desire to win La Decima in the air." "I remember that after we won the ninth (European Cup) that the next day we were already being asked about the 10th," said Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who is the only player on the team to have played in the Glasgow final, a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Madrid was doing its best to avoid terming its infatuation with perhaps the most important trophy in club football an obsessive affair, despite the very make-up of the club being shaped by it. "Its not an obsession, its a great motivation," Ancelotti said on Tuesday. "We have a great opportunity to get into the history books of this club. Its not an obsession but an opportunity." Madrids recent record in Europes top competition has only bred further impatience to increase its record trophy tally, which led FIFA to bestow it with the title of top club of the 20th century. Madrid won the European Cup six times between 1955 and 66, including a record five consecutive titles.dddddddddddd It took 32 years to win the seventh in 1998, which not only provided liberation but led to returned success in the competition. But following the ninth cup win in 2002, Madrid went seven straight seasons without advancing from the first knockout stage despite president Florentino Perezs enormous spending on the likes of Brazil striker Ronaldo, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. The arrival of coach Jose Mourinho in 2010/11 reversed that trend with Madrid reaching the semifinals for three straight years. But never the final, until now. "In the last couple of years weve played well in this competition and we are always just one step away, so I think our fans deserve to experience this, reaching a final after 12 years," said Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. "To feel pressure would be a problem. You have to go out convinced that you can win it." Normally teams only produce T-shirts to commemorate final triumphs. Not Madrid, which felt such a release following the semifinal victory against Bayern that it had one ready for the players at the whistle reading "Now for the 10th!" Now, a first final between clubs from the same city stands in the way as Atletico comes off winning its first Spanish league for 18 years with an opportunity to win its first European Cup 40 years on from its lone appearance in a final. "La Decima is the trophy all Madridistas want," Cristiano Ronaldo said in reference to Madrid supporters. ' ' '

Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Hoffman scored twice as the Ottawa Senators roughed up the Anaheim Ducks, 6-2, on Friday. Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad each posted a goal and an assist, while Milan Michalek and Mark Stone also scored for the Senators, who have won four of their last six. Craig Anderson allowed just two goals on 32 shots in the win. Ryan Getzlaf scored both goals while Ilya Bryzgalov gave up all six goals on 31 shots for the Ducks, who came into the game having won eight of their last nine. Ottawa scored just 2:03 in on an early power play as Erik Karlsson sent a one- timed pass from the right point to the slot where Michalek redirected it in for his third of the year. Just over six minutes later, the Senators took a 2-0 lead after Mark Borowieckis slap shot from the left point was stopped, and Stone snapped in the rebound from down low. Skating shorthanded, the Sens made it a 3-0 game as Turris skated through the neutral zone and down the middle before cutting to the left circle and snapping the puck into the right corner at 16:18 of the second. Hoffman scored his first goal just 41 seconds later to give his team a four- goal edge. Getzlaf scored with just 44 seconds left in the second as he knocked in a one- timer in front, and made it a two-goal game 1:49 into the third when he flew down the left wing and bulled his way to the side of the net before lifting it in. INDIANAPOLIS - IndyCar will no longer use standing starts, which were popular with fans but poorly executed by drivers unaccustomed to them. The standing starts were first introduced at Toronto in 2013 and used at four venues last season. But the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis was marred when pole-sitter Sebastian Saavedra stalled, and debris from the resulting three-car accident struck the Indianapolis mayor.IndyCar President of Competition Derrick Walker said Tuesday none of the circuits that have used standing starts in the past met the minimum space requirement. He also said inconsistencies with the launch software made such starts too unpredictable. There is some development needed with the launch, Walker said in a statement that didnt rule out the eventual return of standing starts. We know the fans enjoy it, and we love it, too.IndyCar also announced Tuesday that double points will be awarded in the Indianapolis 500 and the season-ending race at Sonoma Raceway next season. The winner will receive 100 points, the runner-up gets 80 points and 70 points go to the third-place driver. The allocation continues down to the point where those finishing 25th or lower receive 10 points.By giving more points at the season finale at Sonoma, which is on a road course, IndyCar hopes its championship will be more dramatic. The title race has gone down to the finale every season since 2005.The best trend with multiple cars racing for the championship was weighting it for the final race and the Indy 500, which is a special race deserving of double points, Walker said. Also announced Tuesday:— IndyCar will have six open tests, and the new bodywork kits will debut during a March test at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.— The manufacturer championship has been tweaked to reward reliability and competitiveness, with only the top three Chevrolet and Honda finishers receiving points. Previously, points were scored by the overall top five.We dont want the manufacturer championship to be a contest that is solely about whether you can dominate the grid with the number of cars in your lineup, Walker said. It is about engines, and we measure their performance in a few different ways.— Rookie testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will see its three phases increased by 5 mph each. Phase 1 will consist of 10 laps at 205-210 mph. Phase 2 will be 15 laps of 210-215 mph. Phase 3 will be 15 laps in excess of 215 mph. I think they wanted to come out hard and play well in front of their crowd, and I think we handled it well.Brandon Sutter had a goal and two assists, while Steve Downie and Simon Despres added goals for Pittsburgh (9-2-1) in regulation time.Ladd, Jacob Trouba and Evander Kane replied for the Jets (7-5-2), who now have points in seven straight games.I think we just capitalized on our chances, Sutter said. I think overall we could still play a little bit better, but that was a fun game. That was two good teams going at it.You get into a shootout and weve got a couple guys that know a thing or two about scoring goals, he added. The teams combined for 102 penalty minutes and three fights, but no power-play goals. The Jets entered the game with the fourth-best penalty kill in the NHL, and managed to shut down the leagues top power play. The Penguins, meanwhile, extended their perfect stretch on the penalty kill to 34 for 34.Winnipeg had a chance to win the game on the power play after Despres was called for tripping Mark Scheifele with 1:06 left in overtime, but couldnt find the net. Jets defenceman Dustin Byfuglien cross-checked Downie into the corner boards after the goal, but Downies retaliation cost Pittsburgh a power play.An undisciplined second period could have gone even worse for the Jets, but they managed to kill two power plays — including a 29-second two-man advantage. The Penguins power play entered the game a league-best 41.3 per cent, but finished the night 0 for 6.A blast to the top corner from Trouba late in the period made it 3-2 at the second intermission.Kane tied the game on a breakaway at 3:55 of the third period after a lead pass from Wheeler. McDowells last victory on the European Tour came at the Alstom Open de France earlier this year, while his latest PGA Tour win was at the 2013 RBC Heritage. Obviously the course played fairly difficult today, said McDowell. The wind direction had switched completely from practice, some of the game plan had switched a little bit and some of the holes were playing pretty long. A big key to this golf course is driving the ball well and I drove it very well today. I think I missed only one fairway, which is very important. "I was on the plane ride back and Im like, You know, Im going to be back in my Cup car and be back in the comfort zone," he said. The former Sprint Cup champion has had a split focus all month as he prepares for Sundays Double attempt, hoping to become just the second driver to complete the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. He looked at home Thursday, posting the eighth-fastest speed of 191.042 mph in practice. That didnt hold up in qualifying as Busch ended 28th and failed to advance to the second round of the knockout session. Buschs fastest lap was 189.553 mph, meaning he and his No. 41 team have some work to do before Sunday night much as they have the past few weeks. While they won at Martinsville Speedway in March to seemingly lock up a spot in the 16-driver championship Chase, Busch stands 28th in Sprint Cup points. Busch hasnt finished better than 23rd in the five points races since his win at Martinsville. He didnt practice for last weeks All-Star race, showing up and running "cold turkey." Busch ended up 11th. Some might wonder if Buschs time at Indy is coosting him in NASCAR.dddddddddddd He says no. "Ive been right there along with the Cup guys," Busch said Busch surprised his shop last week when he returned after rain wiped out a practice day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He said team members were startled but "at the same time they were relieved because they know that we have some work to do," he said. "I just wanted to show them my commitment." Despite running laps at Indy the past few weeks, Busch has a difficult time explaining the difference between the disciplines. "Ive had to keep them very separate," said Busch, who wrecked during Mondays practice at Indianapolis and will be in a backup car for the Indy 500. Clint Bowyer said many in the garage area are rooting for Busch at his try for history. "I do believe Kurt has an opportunity to pull that off," Bowyer said. "That would be something to make all of us in this sport pretty proud." Busch is soaking up the experience, and he believes his try can give motorsports a "shot in the arm." When its over, though, he knows hell be ready to try to bring his Stewart-Haas team to the top of Sprint Cup. "Ill be back next week and it will be back to normal," he said. ' ' '

LOUIS -- Travis Wood made a beeline for fellow pitcher Jeff Samardzijas locker. He wanted to apologize for all of that run support. "I instantly came in here and gave him a hug and said sorry," the lefty said after the Chicago Cubs got six RBIs from Junior Lake in a 17-5 rout over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. "The offence played great, they brought their A game." Samardzija has a 1.45 ERA, but is 0-3. The Cubs have totalled 15 runs in his eight starts. Lake homered and doubled twice for Chicago, which had lost seven of eight overall. The Cubs totalled just four runs while getting swept in a three-game series at Atlanta over the weekend -- Emilio Bonifacio scored five times himself in this romp. "Thats what we needed," Lake said. "Just play hard and something happened good." Chicago has the worst record in the league at 13-24, but is 4-3 against the defending NL champions. The Cardinals were forced to finish with infielder Daniel Descalso as a relief pitcher getting the final out in the ninth. Its the first time St. Louis used a position player to pitch since Rob Johnson against the Dodgers in a 13-4 loss at home Aug. 7. "Its embarrassing to have to put him into that spot," manager Mike Matheny said. "Hes a team guy and understands, but should have never been in that spot to begin with." "Its tough for all of us to watch." The Cubs hit for the cycle in the first five batters -- Bonifacio doubled, Anthony Rizzo singled, Starlin Castro tripled and Mike Olts two-run homer capped a four-run first inning. Bonifacio had four of Chicagos 20 hits and scored a career-best five times -- the most in the majors this season -- once on a play overturned by video review. Rizzo and Castro each drove in three as the Cubs set season highs for runs and hits. Cardinals reliever Randy Choate gave up a career-worst six runs in the ninth and left with two outs. Descalso made his first pro pitching appearance and retired the only batter he faced, getting Oltt on a fly ball.dddddddddddd "I just went out there and did what they asked me to do," Descalso said. "I really dont want to talk about this." Wood (3-4) beat St. Louis for the second time in three starts despite giving up five runs in six innings. He hit two batters in the fifth and both scored. Tyler Lyons (0-3) surrendered nine runs in four innings in his fourth start in place of injured Joe Kelly. "I felt a lot better the first two innings than I did in the third and fourth," Lyons said. "Its just one of those things. Sometimes you just get hit, I guess." Allen Craig drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Yadier Molina had two hits, an RBI and a steal when he caught Wood napping in the fifth and took third without a throw. Lake hit a three-run homer in the second for a 7-0 lead. He had an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run double in the ninth. Lake began the game with eight RBIs in 92 at-bats this season. Three of his four homers have come against the Cardinals. "Hes electric, for sure," Wood said. "When hes on, hes on. Hes got tremendous pop and nice to see it come out." Olt leads NL with eight homers, including four in the last six games, all on the road. In the fourth, Bonifacio was called out at the plate when he tried to score on Rizzos grounder to short with the infield in. The Cubs challenged the call, and the ruled was reversed. NOTES: The Cubs previous bests for runs and hits came at Comiskey Park on Thursday when they scored 12 runs on 15 hits against the White Sox. ... Bonifacio is the first Cubs player to score five runs since Jody Davis in 1987. ... Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright (6-2, 4.75) opposes Jake Arrieta (0-0, 2.89) in the second game of a four-game set. Wainwright is 9-7 for his career against Chicago but just 3-6 with a 4.83 ERA at home, and is coming off his first career loss at Wrigley Field on May 2. ... Cardinals LHP Jaime Garcia, rehabbing from shoulder surgery, allowed two runs on three hits in five innings for Triple-A Memphis. ' ' '

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Its not like the Miami Heat playing well in the postseason is newsworthy, but the way theyre getting it done at the moment should terrify the remaining seven teams with a chance at the title. The fact the Heat are 6-0 is impressive enough, but with every victory, theyre building momentum. Are they going to go undefeated in the postseason? No, but in these early rounds, Miami is just having its way with Charlotte and now Brooklyn. Its not like the Heat need confidence what with winning the last two titles, but they did finish the regular season 11-14. Teams are trying to figure out ways to be at their best (in the playoffs), said MVP runner-up LeBron James. We have to continue to work our offense, work our defense, put ourselves in a position to be successful. The Heat have done that and it started on the defensive side of the ball. Miami has yet to allow 100 points in the postseason and surrenders an average of 89.3 points per game. Thats a stout improvement from the regular-season number of 97.4 ppg and the Heat rank No. 1 in the postseason in opponents scoring. Granted, the Bobcats at their best are offensively challenged and things became easier for Miami to defend when Al Jefferson got hurt. But, Brooklyn has firepower and the Heat have cooled them off, not allowing the Nets more than 86 points in either of their two games. With that side of the ball in good shape, the offense has been clicking. When one thinks of the Heat, the mind wanders inevitably to the Big Three of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Its fair since theyre all going to the Hall of Fame, but the Heats versatility has been on display like that weird, hologram egg in Oceans Twelve. Eleven members of the Heat are averaging 10 minutes a game or more. Sure, not all have played in all six games, but when theyre out there, everyone is contributing. Look at the starters for example. Shane Battier played 2:04 of the entire series against Charlotte. Head coach Erik Spoelstra reinserted him in the starting lineup against the smaller Nets and hes 3-for-6 from beyond the 3- point line. Conversely, Spoelstra pulled the plug on Udonis Haslem since the Nets only play one player over 6 feet, 10 inches in height at any given time. Its been an underrated aspect of Spoelstras tenure in Miami -- his ability to sit players down and choose the right one. Battier sat out times against the San Antonio Spurs in last seasons NBA Finals. Same goes for Chris Andersen. Anyone want to bet Spoelstra employs more Haslem and Birdman in the next round when the Heat will face either the Indiana Pacers or the Washington Wizards? Both teams are bigger, so Spo will adapt. Spoelstra isnt Red Auerbach just for using the correct rotation, but his second-unit guys are paying dividends. The Heat bench ranked 17th in scoring during the regular season, but at least one Miami player has scored in double figures in five of their six postseason games and its been four different players. In fact, the Heat have had five double-figure scorers in the last three games, a great sign for a group that has, at times, been too reliant on letting James or Wade do their thing and everyone else watches with glowing admiration. We dont really care about who scores. Five guys in double figures once again tonight, so the ball is moving, James said after Thursdays Game 2 win. Guys are in a great rhythm. James may say he doesnt care who scores, but hes walking the talk. After averaging 30 points in the Bobcats series, LeBron is down to 22 ppg versus the Nets. His shot numbers remained steady and his assists are in decline against Brooklyn. So basically, the Heat are still winning convincingly with James not producing to his maximum. Is that not the scariest thing imaginable? The Heat have been tested to some degree and many thought they would be considering the Nets went 4-0 against them in the regular season. Even if Brooklyn gets a game at home, Miami is going to advance. The Wizards could give them some trouble with their size, which is still a sore spot for Miami. The inexperience in the postseason will doom Washington against the Heat. For months, everyone has waited for the Miami/Indiana series, but at this stage, that matchup would be more anticlimactic than the ending to an M. Night Shyamalan movie (not including The Sixth Sense). Miami is poised for another deep run. Anything less than a fourth consecutive trip to the Finals would be shocking, but the Heat are doing their part. Theyre playing fantastic basketball and improved in important aspects from the regular season. Just wait until James plays like his dominant self. They might not lose. RANDOM THOUGHTS - Even if Donald Sterling doesnt tie up the NBA with litigation and delays, things might remain bad if he tries to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to his wife Shelly. Head coach Doc Rivers said it would be a very hard situation. That translates into some Clippers players or staff would have a problem with it, and then its gets really complicated. Remember, the players got everything they wanted from commissioner Adam Silver, so if they dont get what they want, what happens next? - Ill ask - what is the fascination with Steve Kerr? Hes never coached, didnt do all that well in his only capacity in the league as a personnel guy with the Phoenix Suns and, even if he has a good basketball mind, think of the ex-coaches on the sidelines and ask yourself, why are two teams fawning over Kerr? My theory is that once Phil Jackson expressed interest, which was basically from the day he was hired, maybe the Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz thought, If Phil wants him, he must be something. Otherwise, Im kind of lost on this one. - George Karl, Lionel Hollins, Avery Johnson, Mike DAntoni, Mike Woodson and Mark Jackson are all available. Pick a Van Gundy. Nate McMillan and Byron Scott are, too. Lets not even discuss if Rick Adelman is serious about retirement, because then he should be a major candidate as well. This just drives home how strange it seems that Kerr is the leading candidate for two such highly attractive jobs. - Kobe Bryant wants some say in the next Los Angeles Lakers coach. This is a tricky issue. As the superstar, and one who can be tough to manage, it might make some sense to consult him. But, Bryant cant be the one making these decisions. Its too much power. In theory, the Lakers want a long-term solution and Bryants contract is for two years, so you do the math. - The San Antonio Spurs are demolishing the Blazers, but I give Portland some credit. There was a rattlesnake in the Blazers locker room Thursday. I wouldnt have played. Id have booked a seat on a plane back to Portland, or wouldve started jogging there if I couldnt find one in a suitable amount of time. - Love making the medias votes on awards public. It explains a lot of the strange votes. - Sticking with Heat versus Spurs in the Finals. - Movie moment - Planes is my 2-year-olds latest movie obsession. I can not wait until hes old enough for The Godfather. At this rate, Im going to show it to him when hes 4. - TV moment - 24 is still better than most of whats on television at the moment. My beef with the two-hour debut was it took all of 45 minutes to immediately circle back into regular 24 mode. Wouldve been a golden opportunity to shake up the plot structure a little. Thats how the Ravens won when Ryan was their defensive co-ordinator from 2005-08, and that is precisely the formula Baltimore used to beat Ryans New York Jets on Sunday. Joe Flacco threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones, Justin Tucker kicked four field goals and the Ravens shut down the Jets sputtering offence in a 19-3 victory. The defending Super Bowl champion Ravens (5-6) had lost four of five before bouncing back to beat New York (5-6) and keep their playoff hopes alive. Jones had four catches for 103 yards and returned five punts for 108 yards. But Baltimore won on the strength of its defence. The unit forced three turnovers, limited the Jets to 220 yards and denied 11 of 12 third-down tries. Rookie Geno Smith completed nine of 22 passes for 127 yards and two interceptions, both by Corey Graham. "What can you say about our defence?" coach John Harbaugh said. "It was a dominant defensive performance." It was the fewest points allowed by Baltimore since December 2009, a 48-3 win over Detroit. "I feel like we were dialed in today," linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "Theres always a little something added when were playing Rex. Were proud of the fact what we didnt give up a touchdown, and getting off the field on third down was huge." New York had alternated wins and losses in its first 10 games, but the pattern ended here with its second straight defeat. Ryan, who also served as defensive line coach with Baltimore from 1999-2004, fell to 0-3 against his former team. "We knew, quite honestly, that their defence was going to be tough sledding," Ryan said. "With that, weve got to be more efficient on third down. Thats a big reason (for) the struggles. I thought we dropped too many balls, and thats where it started offensively. On defence, when youre playing in a game like that, you got to be sound, you got to be good and it has to be for 60 minutes. "Theres probably three or four plays that we werent in." The Ravens tried several ploys to spice up their stagnant offence, most notably using backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor in a variety of formations. Not only did Taylor receive a direct snap and run, but he also handed off the ball and caught a pass in his most extensive action of the season. None of it produced a touchdown, though, until Jones got behind former teammate Ed Reed and made a fine catch of Flaaccos deep throw before coasting into the end zone for a 19-3 lead with 5 seconds left in the third quarter.dddddddddddd That was more than enough to dispose of the Jets, whose offence was so out of sync that they burned their third timeout of the second half with 14:53 left in the fourth quarter. Over his last six games, Smith has thrown 10 interceptions and one touchdown pass. "This is not on one individual," Ryan said. "This is on us, collectively." Obviously, thats the message Ryan conveyed to his players. "We got to back him up," offensive tackle Willie Colon said of Smith. "We didnt do that today." But Smiths numbers have created conjecture that Ryan might be close to changing quarterbacks. "Everybody always wants a new quarterback in there," Smith said. "I just keep trying to improve and work on myself. I know I can lead this team to the playoffs." Tucker kicked a 53-yard field goal for a 12-3 lead early in the third quarter after a 20-yard punt return by Jones gave Baltimore the ball at the New York 33. Graham subsequently ended two New York drives with interceptions in the third and fourth quarters. "They made some plays," Graham said, "but when it came down to it, we made the bigger plays. We knew we had to outplay their defence, and thats what we were able to do." Baltimores previous seven games were decided by six points or fewer, four of which resulted in losses. This was the Ravens most lopsided win since Sept. 22. "Its just a relief to get a win," linebacker Daryl Smith said. The Jets trailed 9-3 at halftime despite completing only three passes, gaining 73 yards, making three first downs and losing the ball after the snap hit the man in motion. Using Josh Cribbs in the wildcat formation on several plays, New York went up 3-0 with a drive in which Smith caught an 18-yard pass from Cribbs and completed an 18-yarder to Greg Salas. The Ravens answered with field goals on their next two possessions. The second kick was set up by a 60-yard completion from Flacco to Torrey Smith, who got behind Antonio Cromartie and made a nice over-the-shoulder grab. Tucker kicked another field goal just after the two-minute warning after tight end Ed Dickson caught two passes for 40 yards. Notes: The Ravens have at least one sack in 22 straight games, tying a franchise record. ... Jets LB Troy Davis left with a chest injury in the second half and did not return. ... Torrey Smith has 859 yards receiving, a new career high. ' ' '
RENTON, Wash. - Tharold Simon never started a game in his NFL career until Week 7 of this season when he finally got to line up opposite Richard Sherman in Seattles secondary.Simon was fully aware of what that meant: lots of passes were about to be thrown his way.Its actually fun. You want to get challenged and thats the big thing about it. You dont want to go out there and be bored, Simon said. (Sherman) likes to be challenged, too, every day. Thats fun when you go out there and you know they wont challenge him too much. It just gives you more of an opportunity to go out there and show the people what you can do, show yourself, your coaches what you can do out there and go out there and have fun.Sherman will always receive the majority of the attention in Seattles secondary. But the unwillingness of quarterbacks to challenge Sherman this season — beginning with the opener against Green Bay — has created opportunities for Simon and Byron Maxwell to show off their skills. So far, theyve matched whats become the standard set by Seattles talented secondary, helping the Seahawks have the No. 1 pass defence in the NFL.Every corner we have in here, every DB, its just greatness in that room, Seattle free safety Earl Thomas said. ... Everybody is absorbed in that room because we really love what were doing, we love the environment. At this point, Maxwell is used to playing across the field from Sherman. Maxwell started five regular-season games last season, all three post-season games and entered this season the established starting cornerback on the right side. Hes started nine of 13 games this season, only leaving the lineup because of a calf injury suffered in Week 6 against Dallas.Since returning from the injury Maxwell has added another layer to his game, in part because of how well Simon has played. When facing bigger wide receivers, Seattle has recently moved Maxwell inside to cover slot receivers when extra defensive backs are needed, putting Simon on the outside.Hes worked there before. When he was first coming up through the ranks, he was working as a nickel so he has background in it, Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. He always did OK, so we knew he had that in him. We hadnt featured him in it yet. Hes done really well. It was really cool to see that happen.Maxwells move inside was most noticeable last week against the Eagles when he had four tackles and two passes defenced. While Maxwell was batting passes away meant for Jordan Matthews, Simon was stepping in on the outside.Seattle has finally got a chance this season to see Simon, a third-round pick in 2013 who spent the entire season on injured reserve. The experience hes gotten showed last week with the first interception of his career. Simon had a decision to make on which of two wide receivers to follow. He made the right choice, jumping in front of Riley Cooper for his first career pick.I was like, OK, let me stick to this one, and the ball just ended up right there, lobbed up, and I went up and got it, Simon said.According to STATS, Sherman and Maxwell have been targeted 57 times each this season, but combined theyve allowed only one touchdown. Simon has yet to give up a touchdown pass either, and the ball for his first interception was still sitting in his truck as of Wednesday. Were flexible now. We have flexibility, Carroll said. We can look at matchups and do what we need to do.NOTES: C Max Unger (ankle/knee), TE Cooper Helfet (ankle) and DE Demarcus Dobbs (ankle) all did not practice Wednesday. Carroll said earlier in the week that Helfet was ahead of Unger in recovery from their injuries. ... The former world No. 1 Djokovic won the first 11 games in steamrolling Kazakhstans Andrey Golubev 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 in a mere 87 minutes at the famed All England Club, while the third-seeded Murray also played very clean tennis in taking care of Belgian David Goffin 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. Murray popped eight aces in the predicable just-over-two-hour affair versus Goffin. The French Open runner-up Djokovic titled here in 2011 and was last years Wimbledon runner-up to his good friend Murray. Djokovic, playing his first grass-court tennis of the year, is the top seed at this fortnight, despite being ranked second in the world behind French Open champion and two-time Wimbledon winner Rafael Nadal. "It was a great start," Djokovic said after moving on Monday. Up next for the six-time Grand Slam titlist will be 35-year-old Czech veteran Radek Stepanek. Murray has won 14 straight matches at the AEC, where he captured an Olympic gold medal in 2012 before giving Great Britain its first male Wimbledon singles champion in 77 years last year. Murray entered and exited Centre Court to standing ovations on Day 1. "It was nice," Murray said. "I was nervous this morning, nervous yesterday. Walking through brings back a lot of good memories. I got a nice round of applause and once you sit down in a chair its time to get ready for this year and move on from last year." Among those in the Royal Box for Murrays match were his father and grandparents and former NBA superstar Shaquille ONeal.
